Los Alamos National Laboratory Scrum Master 4 (IT Project Manager 4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This posting is for an IT Project Manager 4 (Scrum Master) in the Information Technology Project Management (ITPM) Group in the Service Innovation Division, which is part of the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Business Management (ALDBUS). The SI-ITPM group provides IT project and program management, including Agile methodologies to ensure IT projects achieve success and deliver expected outcomes within scope, schedule, and budget.

This position will be deployed to the Software and Applications Engineering (SAE) Division, which is making the transition from waterfall to the Agile framework. This position will serve as a Scrum Master for one or more software applications development projects. We’re looking for someone with a deep understanding of Agile frameworks: scrum techniques and artifacts (such as definition of done, user stories, automated testing, backlog refinement); a track record of continued and recent education in Scrum, including training, conferences, user groups, self-study, etc.; advanced knowledge of one or more Agile frameworks (Scrum, XP, Kanban, Nexus, LeSS, SAFe, Crystal, FDD, etc.); and advanced knowledge and experience with Agile best practices (user stories, ATDD, TDD, Continuous Integration, Continuous Testing, Pairing, Automated Testing, Agile Games).

A successful candidate for this position will use specific knowledge about Agile to lead and coach teams to achieve IT objectives. They will coach and facilitate development teams to plan, track and execute work, manage timelines, resolve impediments and coach team members on Agile principles and practice. They will coordinate people and projects, keeping the focus on deliverables and outcomes. They will use professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways. They will frequently contribute to the development and/or implementation of new standards and methods. Someone in this role will be expected to develop resolutions to complex problems that require the frequent use of creativity and where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Their work will be accomplished without considerable direction and they will often coordinate the activities of other personnel. They will be responsible for exerting significant latitude in determining objectives of assignment, and determining the methods and procedures needed for new assignments.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Agile Knowledge and Experience

Expert knowledge and experience in playing the Scrum Master role for at least five years for a development team. Expert knowledge and experience with successful Agile best practices and frameworks.

Leadership, Coaching and Mentoring

Excellent communication and servant leadership skills, problem-solving and conflict-resolution ability, and outstanding organizational skills. Excellent written and verbal communication, listening, and presentation skills. Track record of coaching and transforming teams through forming, storming, norming, and performing as organizations move from waterfall methodologies to a Scrum framework.

Technical Knowledge and Experience

Experience being on multiple development teams in a variety of different contexts (different team sizes, different organizations, different cultures, co-located vs. distributed, etc.). Knowledge of software development methodologies, tools and processes, including source code control, application development tools and techniques, database design, development and management, programming languages, and component integration. Advanced knowledge of IT environments and application development methodologies.

Training/Certifications: Scrum master certification (CSPO, CSM, or equivalent)

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and 12 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience in transitioning an organization from waterfall methods to an Agile environment. Experience working in a government or national laboratory environment.

Training/Certifications: PMP desired

Location: This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion.Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 2 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
