What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D; Engineer 2 or R&D; Engineer 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Space and Remote Sensing Group (ISR-2) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a qualified R&D; engineer to participate in the execution of our portfolio of cutting-edge research programs in remote-sensing, with special emphasis in signal processing and phenomenology. Relevant technologies include: vibrometry, radio frequency (RF) emissions, spectral sensing, high-speed imaging, ultra-low-light imaging including advanced photon counting detectors, and other passive/active remote sensing approaches. Areas of research and development that the successful candidate will participate in include one or more of the following:

  • Development of algorithms and techniques for processing time-series and optical imaging data, signal detection and characterization, and high-level statistical inference in data intensive settings

  • Source-to-sensor modeling, including modeling of source physics, signal propagation, sensor performance, and the validation of the data processing and analysis algorithms

  • Scientific and statistical analysis of data coupled with theoretical modeling and understanding the underlying emission and propagation physics

  • Design of innovative RF, vibration, and optical sensors and instruments using both improved concepts based on demonstrated physics principles and the development of new detection principles

  • Scientific and statistical analysis of data coupled with theoretical modeling and understanding of the underlying emission and propagation physics

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

R&D; Engineer 2 ($87,800 - $144,800)

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with conducting basic and/or applied research or technical work that is relevant to one or more of the above programs and focus areas

  • Experience with the application of basic techniques in signal processing or statistical detection theory

  • Some combination of experience with RF and/or optical systems such as antennas, electronics, sensors, focal plane arrays, cameras, optics, lasers, data acquisition, and instrumentation.

  • Some experience with applied computing to process, analyze, and interpret data, and demonstrable knowledge of one or more scientific programming languages (e.g. C/C++, Python, Matlab, IDL)

  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively in a team environment and ability to work independently

  • Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly in written and oral communications including a history of contributing to technical reports

  • Ability to conduct field experiments at various national and potentially international locations

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance (generally requires U.S. citizenship)

Job Requirements for R&D; Engineer 3 ($96,600 - $161,300)

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the R&D; Engineer 3 level requires:

  • Some combination of experience with applied mathematics, scientific data analysis, and the practical use of numerical algorithms (imaging, time-series, spectral, etc.)

  • Demonstrated ability in signals phenomenology modeling, detection, and measurement, in RF, optical, or vibrometry

  • Demonstrated experience with algorithms development and commensurate experience with applied computing to process, analyze, and interpret data with some combination of the following:

  • Fourier techniques

  • Compressive sensing

  • Blind-source separation

  • Multi-sensor fusion

  • DSP with real-time processing emphasis

  • Sparse-array detection and algorithms

  • Demonstrated experience with the development of novel signal/image processing algorithms

  • Demonstrated ability to utilize physical models of signal generation, propagation, and sensing in order to design effective signal detection and processing algorithms

Desired Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience with the development or deployment of remote-sensing RF and/or optical sensors

  • Experience with data acquisition and management of large data sets

  • Experience with laser-based remote sensing

  • Experience with instrument response characterization, calibration, and optimization

Education:

R&D; Engineer 2: Graduate degree (PhD or Master’s) in electrical engineering, optical engineering, physics or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

R&D; Engineer 3: Requirements for R&D; Engineer 2 and significant record of professional scientific/engineering work experience and accomplishment.
