What You Will Do_

The Software and Applications Engineering (SAE) Division supports LANL’s enterprise application and performs software application development support, database development and administration, software quality management, and enterprise application consulting. The Site Infrastructure, Mission, and Programs Software Group (SAE-3) provides software engineering services, custom application development, and commercial off the shelf application implementations.

This position will be filled at either the Software Developer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.The selected candidate will work to support the development and maintenance of various internal and external applications.

Software Developer 1 ($60,400 - $95,900)

Responsibilities Include:

  • Frequent contact with clients and management, as well as team members.

  • Authority and scope to apply expertise to many interesting projects and technical problems.

  • Gathering requirements, providing recommendations, and implementing solutions.

  • Design and development of new applications and web software as well as maintaining and modifying existing sites and software. Testing, debugging, and evaluating such systems to meet functional requirements.

  • Recommend changes in development, maintenance, and web systems standards.

Software Developer 2 ($72,500 - $118,200)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the Software Developer 2 will be required to:

  • Self-initiate work with limited supervision.

  • Use independent judgment for determining course of action to accomplish objectives.

  • Use a broad range of advanced technical skills to solve complex technical issues.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Software Developer 1

  • Demonstrated experience with HTML5, CSS3, SASS, and JavaScript.

  • Demonstrated experience with one or more server side languages.

  • Experience with conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions to problems.

  • Demonstrated experience with solving unique Web development and production problems by using analytic ability and innovative thinking to meet budget, timetables, and objectives.

  • Knowledge of common database technologies.

Software Developer 2

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Software Developer 2 level requires:

  • Demonstrated experience designing and developing large applications from the ground up.

  • Ability to problem solve, negotiate, and use judgment to resolve conflicts, solve problems, increase efficiency, and improve services and products with minimal management help.

  • Knowledge of general purpose language (Javascript, Python, PHP, Java).

  • Knowledge of database systems (MySQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB).

  • Knowledge of web server (Apache, Nginx).

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with modern frontend frameworks like React, Angular, or Vue.js.

  • Experience with AWS based services.

  • Knowledge of MVC design pattern and/or Object Oriented design.

Education:

Software Developer 1: Position typically requires a relevant bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Software Developer 2: Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
