What You Will Do

The Space Data Science & Systems Group (ISR-3) is seeking candidates for Software Engineer positions within its System Development and Integration (SDI) team. This team is responsible for the design, implementation, and sustainment of complex computing systems for space and remote sensing scientific computing applications, large-scale data storage and archival, CAD/CAM, machine learning, and to support the development and operation of real-time embedded systems, data acquisition systems, telemetry systems, and distributed sensor networks.

Successful candidates will bring their experience in system architecture, system administration and integration, and software programming and work as part of a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, and solutions architects to provide well-managed and resilient mission-aligned computing infrastructure at multiple classification levels. Some non-standard working hours and travel may be required.

These positions will be filled at the R&D Engineer 3 or 4 level based on the skills and experience of the selected candidate.

R&D Engineer 3 ($98,900 - $165,100)

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead design and development of specialized heterogeneous computing infrastructures

  • Define software tools necessary to support developed systems

  • Lead the operation and maintenance of developed systems including monitoring & diagnostics, problem resolution, system backups, and security compliance

  • Assist leadership in scheduling commitments and resources

  • Provide mentoring to other team members

  • Contribute to internal and external funding proposals

  • Contribute to peer review of work of others across organizations or disciplines

R&D Engineer 4 ($119,700 - $201,700)

In addition to the duties outlined above, R&D Engineer 4 responsibilities include:

  • Perform in a leadership role such as Project Leader or Team Leader with associated responsibilities for project controls/reporting and personnel management

  • Collect and access technical requirements from internal and external mission stakeholders and generate fully scoped system designs including implementation cost and schedule

  • Define technical direction for team

  • Lead process and project planning for internal and delivered systems

  • Represent the Lab to external mission partners

  • Author proposals for internal and external funding

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Advanced system administration and development skills (kernel development, OS configuration, benchmarking, and performance)

  • Experience with developing systems to meet stringing security requirements (SGIT, ICD503, NIST 800-53)

  • Experience in a production computing facility with high availability requirements

  • Computer networking experience including router/firewall policy management

  • Experience leading multi-person projects to meet scope, schedule and budget.

In addition to the minimum job requirements outlined above, the R&D Engineer 4 also requires:

  • Leadership experience with advanced multi-organizational projects

  • Demonstrated project management skills including planning, execution, monitoring and closeout.

  • Ability to consistently set goals and direction for multiple projects for yourself and other staff

  • Demonstrated experience managing technical staff including evaluation of performance, recruitment and selection, and technical development

Education : Advanced degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related engineering degree from an ABET accredited college or university. A Master’s degree in the above fields is highly desirable.
