What You Will Do
Los Alamos National Laboratory has several great machining opportunities for highly motivated technicians to work with current staff to perform fabrication and machining operations on a wide range of materials, components and projects in both a classified and unclassified environment.
Successful Level 3 Special Materials Machinist candidates will perform the following duties and responsibilities:
Provide machining support for the fabrication of components for a variety of machining operations which may include special nuclear materials (SNM) and non-SNM machining activities
Support high-precision production machining of SNM, precision disassembly of SNM, and other precision machining operations in a nuclear facility
Support development of equipment, processes, and tooling for new missions, products, projects and other operational activities
Working from complex drawings, sketches, and/or verbal instructions to facilitate the manufacture of parts and assemblies by programming, setting up, operating and repair of manual and CNC mills and lathes, and a variety of general machine shop tooling
Acquire and maintain pertinent certifications, such as the Fissile Material Handler (FMH) certification, to support fabrication deliverables and to be qualified as a glovebox worker
Primarily machining hazardous materials and high explosives that can range from a wide range of metals and metal alloys (including depleted uranium and uranium alloys), composite materials, plastics, foams, rubber, graphite, high explosives and other materials as necessary
Support installation, testing, operation of new equipment and removal of legacy equipment, while complying with all safety, security and environmental regulations. This will include the use of applicable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) i.e. –safety glasses, steel toe shoes, anti-C clothing, respirator, etc.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Willingness to work with radioactive/hazardous materials, and use hands-on mechanical/mathematical skills
Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GT&T;) and ability to read and interpret customer technical specifications from a variety of media (including drawings and blueprints, informal sketches and computer-generated solid models)
Experience performing precision measurements with hand and bench inspection tools such as, micrometers, verniers, calipers, gages, dial/digital indicators, etc. to ensure that the finished product meets dimensional specifications, where tolerance is typically +/- .0005 inch or less
In-depth working knowledge of the set up and operation of a variety of manual and precision CNC machine tools
Experience with Computer Systems (Servers, Licenses and Software Upgrades), Prototype Fabrication Environment and Operating Manual or power Lifting Equipment/Devices
Experience working in a nuclear facility and/or with hazardous materials
Crane and forklift operator certification
Journeyman Machinist Certification, RADWORKER Certification, Nuclear Quality Assurance (NQA) Certification or LANL High Explosives (HE) Handler Certification
Expertise in programming CNC machines and well versed with CAD/CAM software (i.e. -Pro-E, Pro-M, CREO, Solid Works or CAM Works)
Welding and/or sheet metal fabrication experience
Specific experience setting up, programming, and operating T-base and L-base lathes, DMU mills, Hardinge lathes, HAAS mills and lathes, Mazak mills and lathes, Bridgeport mills and/or manual machine tools
Active Q Clearance
Position typically requires a high school diploma and 4-6 years of related experience, OR
Equivalent combination of education and experience, OR
At this level, additional training, certification, and/or education may be desirable with technical institute graduate, Journeyman license or Associate’s degree preferred

Sigma Division focuses on materials science and engineering, emphasizing metallurgical processes and research in support of the experimental testing program at Los Alamos. The Division is a service oriented capability that supports a broad customer base, both internal and external to LANL, with high quality one of a kind prototype components. The work ranges from unclassified to TS/SCI level security and covers all materials from hydrogen to uranium on the periodic chart, as well as non-metal, such as composites and inorganic materials.
The LANL Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division addresses national security challenges by executing mission-driven, large-scale, integrated experiments, emphasizing sub-critical experiments, hydrodynamic tests, focused experiments, and tests of engineered systems. J Division operates the Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) facility, and also operates or utilizes other LANL firing sites and facilities. The Division collaborates to execute sub-critical and other integrated experiments at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) and NNSA, DOE, and partner organization facilities as needed. Within J Division,J-8, the High Explosives (HE) Fabrication Group, engineers and manufactures precision high explosives and mock components for a diverse R&D; customer base to meet present and future national security needs in a safe, secure and efficient manner.
The Plutonium Machining Group (PT-2) is responsible for developing equipment, process, and machining plutonium in support of the United States’ modern stockpile. PT-2 has the responsibility for operating and maintaining the plutonium facility laboratories, gloveboxes and equipment in PF-4 and development activities at satellite machine shops. PT-Division’s pit manufacturing operations include plutonium casting, machining, gas, chemical, welding and assembly. PT also offers a broad range of challenges including equipment development, process development, precision machining, models based engineering using CAD/CAM, and challenging machining/disassembly activities in support of national security
Prototype Fabrication (PF) is a division consisting of two groups whose mission is to provide machining, welding and life-cycle support to machine tool systems for the Laboratory. Capabilities include Precision Fabrications in a wide variety of materials and sizes; Preventative and Corrective Maintenance; Fabrication Systems Support; and Fabrication Technology and Engineering for machine tool design/development. Located across multiple technical areas across the Laboratory, PF manages a diverse machine tool capability and resources necessary for fabrication and manufacturing in support of multiple programs while adhering to Lab, federal, DOE and state requirements.
