Los Alamos National Laboratory Sr. Network Professional (Network Professional 3/4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do_

The position will be part of the NIE-TS Telecommunications Services/Specialized IP Services Team that is responsible for the design and operation of the Laboratory’s next generation VoIP and video streaming systems. The VoIP deployment will be based on Broadsoft Broadworks application software, Acme Packet Session Border Controllers, Zervina Enhanced Device Management, Genband VoIP based high density Analog gateways, and AudioCodes SIP/TDM Gateways using standards-based protocols.

IPTV is a streaming system at LANL that provides live streaming video content for Laboratory wide presentations and television content across the campus. The IPTV system is comprised of hardware and software from multiple vendors to include; Wowza streaming software residing on LANL’s internal cloud based computing, Dish network, and VBrick Set Top Boxes.

This position will be filled at either the Network Professional 3 or Network Professional 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Network Professional 3 Responsibilities (NP-3) ($87,800-$144,800)

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • The design, deployment, and operational support for LANL VoIP and IPTV systems

  • Documentation of new systems and features.

  • Working with organizations and teams to transition designs into operations.

  • Partnering with 5ESS telecom switch support staff, network engineering, network operations, network services, and email services personnel to support the VoIP and Call Center applications.

Network Professional 4 Responsibilities (NP-4) ($96,600-$161,300)

In addition to the above, the successful candidate will perform the following, including but not limited to:

  • Working on project implementation such as Cloud Services and Mobility Device Integration.

  • Providing training and assisting with proposal writing.

  • Conducting project planning, cost analysis and vendor comparisons.

  • Providing solutions for unusually significant, unique or complex telecommunication issues.

  • Developing advanced concepts, techniques, and standards based on professional principles and theories.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team environment

  • Linux operating system skills, RHEL6, 7 and or OEL6

  • Demonstrated experience performing system administration on production Linux systems

  • Basic knowledge of at least three of the following IP standards-based telecommunications protocols, RSTP, SIP, RTP, TLS, SRTP, RTMP, SSL as well as IPTV streaming protocols including H.264 and HD video.

  • Understanding of VoIP security architecture & components (e.g. firewalls, session border controllers)

  • Experience with video streaming systems also known as IPTV

  • Some knowledge of network switching and routing

  • Experience implementing designs provided by engineering

  • Experience participating in network systems projects

  • Knowledge of TCP, UDP, IP

  • Knowledge of DNS, DHCP, and email services

  • Experience with web services

  • Demonstrated verbal and written communications skills

  • Demonstrated ability to document and follow troubleshooting processes

  • Knowledge of project management principles to set project scope, schedule, priorities, and deliverable

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship building skills with an ability to work with all levels of management, cyber security personnel, and customers

Additional Job Requirements for Network Professional 4: In addition to the requirements outlined for the Network Professional 3 above, the Network Professional 4 requirements include:

  • Demonstrated experience with collaboration across organizational boundaries

  • Expert in documentation development and training for every level of knowledge

  • Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership to others

  • Demonstrated experience managing IT services

  • Demonstrated ability to work under consultative direction toward predetermined long-range targets. Assignments are often self-initiated with minimum supervision

  • Expert knowledge and demonstrated experience with modern networks and network services

  • Experience in defining and collecting metrics to demonstrate project progress

Desired Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge of IP standards-based telecommunications protocols

  • Knowledge and experience with video surveillance systems

  • Knowledge and experience with TDM telephony systems, specifically 5ESS

  • Experience engineering a solution, deploying the solution, and documenting the solution

  • Demonstrated experience with process development, delivery, and training


Network Professional 3

Position typically requires a bachelor's degree and a minimum of eight years' related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, applicable advanced vendor and/or professional certification is desirable.

Network Professional 4

Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of twelve years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, post graduate course work may be expected.
