Los Alamos National Laboratory Synchrontron X-ray Studies of Actinide-Water Interactions in High P-T Environments Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

We are seeking outstanding candidates for a postdoctoral fellow position to perform synchrotron-based X-ray absorption and Raman spectroscopic studies of actinide-water interactions at hydrothermal conditions to work in the Earth System Observations group (EES-14).

The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team including experimentalists and theoreticians to understand dissolution, speciation and reactivity of actinide phases in water-mediated processes in elevated pressure-temperature (P-T) environments. This research is critical for tackling a range of issues in actinide science and technology from disposal of high-level nuclear wastes in a geological repository to development of robust accident-tolerant nuclear fuels to deciphering radionuclide signatures for nuclear monitoring.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience conducting synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopic experiments and data analysis and/or using diamond anvil cells (DACs, especially hydrothermal DACs) combined with various synchrotron and Raman techniques.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills demonstrated through publications in respected professional journals and presentations at international conferences.

  • A candidate may be considered for a postdoctoral position within five years of receiving their Ph.D. or will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.

  • Candidates must display extraordinary ability in scientific research and show clear and definite promise of becoming outstanding leaders in the research they pursue.

Desired Skills

  • Excellent skills in synchrotron/DAC instrumentation setup, assembly & operation, and strong background in structural analysis, coordination chemistry and materials synthesis & characterization.

Education:

A Ph.D. in geosciences, chemistry, materials science, high-pressure physics or closely related fields is required.
