What You Will Do This position will be filled at either the Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
System Engineer 2 ($81,600 - $133,400)
The System Engineer integrates multi-disciplinary engineering input to ensure continued safe and reliable operation of existing systems, and coordinates equipment upgrades and/or replacements.
The successful candidate will:
Monitor, track, and trend system performance
Define maintenance requirements
Troubleshoot and assist with corrective maintenance planning
Define and control system modification
Maintain the technical baseline and support configuration management
Select and install equipment
Ensure field implementation of the LANL Conduct of Engineering (COE) Program
System Engineer 3 ($89,900 - $148,300)
In addition to the duties outlined above, the System Engineer 3 will be required to:
Coordinate integrated multi-discipline teams to deliver equipment solutions to facility and programmatic customers
Serve as a key advisor and backup for the System Engineering Team Leader
Mentor junior engineering staff
Provide advice and consultation to management regarding engineering solutions
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
The successful candidate will possess:
Demonstrated experience in design engineering or system engineering for laboratory and/or industrial facility operations
Demonstrated experience with industry codes and standards.
Demonstrated experience in engineering including design, commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical baseline maintenance
Demonstrated experience with modification definition and control
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
Additional Job Requirement for System Engineer 3:
In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, the System Engineer 3 requires:
Significant knowledge/understanding of engineering systems and calculations, application of engineering methods, and technology-aided engineering tools
Experience with work planning and control methods
Leadership and mentoring skills
Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification – or certification that the candidate has passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
Demonstrated knowledge of DOE standards applicable to facility design, operation, and maintenance
Customer service and project delivery experience
System Engineer 2/3 Education Required: Bachelor of Science in engineering discipline (ABET-accredited).
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
for access to classified matter.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
Engineering Services (ES) Division applies capabilities to enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. Within ES, Facility Engineering is a multi-disciplinary organization consisting of collaborative System and Modification Engineering Teams. Collectively, these teams enable the UI, LANSCE and STO Facility Operations Directorate (FOD) missions across the Lab and in mixed-use office, laboratory, research, and production spaces. FE mission work directly impacts all Laboratory Directorates.
