What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the R&D; Scientist or R&D; Engineer 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Pulsed Field Facility (PFF) is located on the main LANL campus in Los Alamos, New Mexico, and is one of three NHMFL partner institutions, the other two being at the University of Florida, Gainesville, and at Florida State University, Tallahassee. The NHMFL is sponsored primarily by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Division of Materials Research, with additional support from the State of Florida and the Department of Energy. LANL provides unique capabilities to the Pulsed Field Facility for the NHMFL in the form of a 1.4 GVA pulsed power system. In addition to the 100 Tesla Multi-Shot Pulsed Magnet and the 60 T Long Pulse Magnet, the NHMFL features several capacitor-driven pulsed magnets and state-of-the-art diagnostic capabilities for materials science research. The PFF supports a user facility, develops magnet technology, and advances science and technology using high magnetic fields in support of the goals and objectives of NSF and Los Alamos National Laboratory.

LANL and the U.S. National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) is seeking a highly motivated and technically excellent Scientist or Engineer to lead the Magnet Operations and Scientific Techniques (MOST) Team, part of the Magnet Science Group (MAG) and the Materials Physics and Applications Division (MPA). The MOST team has a central and critical role in LANL’s portion of the NHMFL and operation of the Pulsed Field Facility (PFF). The NHMFL is a user facility dedicated to basic research, with research initiatives in materials, energy, and life sciences. The PFF holds the world record for nondestructive, repeatable magnetic fields for science experiments (100 Tesla), with users coming to LANL from around the world. Funding for the NHMFL and the PFF comes primarily from the National Science Foundation (NSF), with additional support from LANL institutional science investments. This is a very exciting time for MPA-MAG and the PFF, with new projects for making major leaps in maximum magnetic field, simultaneously achieving ultra-high pressure, understanding the nature of quantum matter, and a wide variety of measurement techniques.
R&D; Scientist 3 or Engineer 3 ($96,600 - $161,300)
The MOST Team Leader (TL) is in charge of MPA-MAG efforts for magnet cell operations; sample environments; associated scientific measurement techniques and instrumentation.
Coordinating the PFF user program, and directing LANL staff in these areas. The MOST team leader has the responsibility, authority, and resources to lead these operations.
Works with NHMFL PFF users who are top scientists in the areas of materials science, chemistry, and quantum matter. The centrality of this position within the PFF creates substantial opportunity for scientific collaboration for the MOST Team and MOST TL, leading to many co-authorship opportunities for articles in high-impact science journals.
Works closely with other MPA-MAG team leaders to ensure success of the PFF and scientific future of MPA-MAG.
Coordinates activities across the NHMFL, including planning future work with the partner institutions, the NSF, and other sponsor agencies.

Provide in-depth scientific knowledge for NHMFL Science Agenda and LANL Mission Science.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated experience conducting experimental research or development in physical science, engineering, or a related field.
Demonstrated experience developing, testing or using complex measurement systems or scientific instruments for physical science, engineering, or a related field. This experience can be anywhere in the range from invention to prototyping to deployment.
Demonstrated experience in a measurement technique similar to those available to NHMFL user scientists, e.g. voltage-current characteristics (“transport”), magnetization, optical spectroscopy, heat capacity, or similar techniques.
Demonstrated experience in systems used to ensure controlled environments for samples or devices under test (e.g. cryogenic systems, vacuum technology, diamond anvil cells, constant-temperature systems).
Demonstrated experience with tools and instrumentation associated with electrical, electronic, optical, chemical, or mechanical equipment.
Demonstrated experience leading, directing, or coordinating people working on a complex activity to achieve a goal. This experience can be anywhere in the range from basic research to engineering prototypes to system deployment and can include non-technical activities.
Demonstrated experience documenting and reporting on technical work, for example through written plans, proposals, reports, papers, articles, or theses.
Demonstrated experience showing excellent communication skills, written and oral, formal and informal.
Demonstrated experience working both independently and as part of team.
Undergraduate degree (e.g. B.A, A.B. or B.S.) or equivalent experience in physical science, engineering, or a related field.
Additional Required Skills for Level 4:
A track record of scientific or engineering accomplishment commensurate with a subject-matter expert in relevant discipline.
Graduate degree (e.g. M.S. or Ph.D.) or equivalent experience in physical science, engineering, or a related field.
Demonstrated experience and in-depth understanding of key capabilities and science areas associated with NHMFL, PFF, or similar experimental facilities.
Demonstrated experience and in-depth understanding of generating, using, and conducting measurements in ultra-high magnetic fields.
Demonstrated experience and in-depth understanding of measurement systems involving pulsed power or pulsed-magnetic fields.
Demonstrated experience with custom cryogenic measurement systems and related apparatus and instrumentation (e.g. probes, cryostats, liquifiers).
Demonstrated experience and in-depth understanding of experimental measurements with low noise, high stability, high sensitivity, high selectivity, precision, or accuracy.
Demonstrated ability to direct a scientific or technical team and supervise personnel on that team.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate and plan efforts across organizational boundaries, e.g. between technical teams, with support organizations, or with external users.
Demonstrated ability to plan and conduct high-hazard operations through integrated work management (IWM) or similar process.
Either (A) a graduate degree in physical science, engineering, or a related field or (B) an academic or laboratory research track record comparable to that of a graduate degree in physical science, engineering, or a related field.
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance (generally requires U.S. citizenship).
