What You Will Do

The Los Alamos National Laboratory, Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) is seeking an undergraduate candidate in the administrative and business operations fields, including finance/budget, human resources, business administration, and project management. This position requires a motivated, dynamic, reliable, and organized performer who is capable of quickly adapting to strict deadlines, frequent interruptions, and changing priorities. Ability to work effectively in a team environment with all levels of internal and external personnel. The successful candidate will provide administrative assistance to CINT’s research staff (scientists, postdocs, and students), our management team, and other administrative staff.

The internship will provide an opportunity to develop marketable skills in the areas of office procedures, interpersonal relations, office technology, office accounting, written communication, and computer applications to meet the demands and responsibilities of today’s workforce. It will also provide an opportunity to learn administrative and business operations skills for a wide variety of office-related activities including but not limited to:

  • Learning administrative and business applications (e.g., travel, procurement, Oracle Time and Labor (OTL), policies and procedures, etc.)

  • Learning the administrative functions and management of an office.

  • Calendar management for staff and resources.

  • Prioritizing and tracking tasks.

  • Computer skills in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), SharePoint, Outlook, and Labwide systems (OTL, Concur, iProcurement).

  • Managing incoming and outgoing correspondence/documents.

  • Creating and maintaining spreadsheets and database files.

  • Preparing and composing documents.

  • Carrying out job responsibilities with minimal supervision, demonstrating initiative, tact, and discretion with in confidence and sensitive information/matters. Ensuring the office atmosphere is conducive to open communications and interactions.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ability to work a minimum of 20 hours per week, year-round

  • Basic and/or introductory knowledge of and experience in providing administrative services and activities.

  • Basic and/or introductory knowledge of and experience with office-interfacing software packages.

  • Basic skills in the preparation and formatting of correspondence, reports, and/or presentations.

  • Excellent oral and written skills, including proofreading, grammar, spelling, punctuation, accuracy, and attention to detail.

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Ability to effectively work in a team environment and interact with all levels of internal and external personnel, including the ability to build productive internal relationships.

  • Ability to organize and follow-through to completion on multiple tasks, often under strict deadlines, frequent interruptions, and changing priorities.

  • Create, print, and post posters (from pre-existing templates)

  • Webpage maintenance

Education: Applicant must be enrolled in an undergraduate program in Office Administration or Business Administration or related field with a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0.

MPA-CINT is part of the Materials Physics and Applications Division (MPA) with approximately 80 employees including 65 technical and postdoctoral staff members.
