Computational Sciences Graduate Internship Program

What You Will Do

Do something that matters and make a real difference at one of the World's most prestigious and innovative multidisciplinary research institutions.

The Computational Science Graduate Student (GRA) Program offers paid summer and year-round internships for graduate students in a variety of Computer Science, Mathematics, and Statistics projects. The GRA program provides mentoring, hands-on technical experience, and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan complementing the student's chosen area of study.

Computational Science GRA students support LANL projects in a wide range of project areas including, but are not limited to:
  • Computational Earth Science research in support of the development and refinement of simulations used to model subsurface, oceanic, and atmospheric systems;
  • Computational Physics especially related to the testing and improvement of simulations used to predict material and energy flows in extreme temperature and pressure conditions;
  • Developing and testing new mathematical methods to better quantify predictive uncertainty of failures in engineered systems;
  • Improving reliability of supercomputing networks using advanced fault analysis techniques and improved task management algorithms;
  • Research and test various approaches for quantum computing applications; and
  • Application of machine learning techniques to analyze data associated with a variety of physical systems.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program in any Computer Science or Mathematics (or related) discipline.
  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent).
  • Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).

Desired Skills:

Student selected for GRA internships in Computational Science are most competitive when they possess the following knowledge and skills:
  • Computer programming (Python, C++, etc.) in support of scientific or engineering applications;
  • Application of advanced mathematical methods to develop models of physical phenomena;
  • Familiarity with scientific research methods and data demonstrated by completed coursework in the natural sciences;
  • Familiarity with cutting edge computational research in applications such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and quantum computing;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context; and
  • Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting.

Notes to Applicants: The application and required documents must be submitted by March 31, 2023.
Where You Will Work

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.

Additional Details:

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
