What You Will Do



The Technology Applications Group (A-3) uses a broad range of engineering and scientific expertise to support nuclear counter proliferation (NCP), nuclear counter terrorism (NCT), nuclear emergency response (ER) missions, defense, intelligence, and emerging technologies. In this position you will engage in mechanical design, analysis, prototype fabrication, assembly, and test support for a wide variety of projects supporting LANL's Global Security and/or Weapons missions.

We are seeking a technologist to bring experience and expertise in additive manufacturing along with the desire and proven ability to engage in a wide range of work. Your primary functions will be split between operating and maintaining multiple additive manufacturing solutions and providing mechanical 3D CAD support in the development of parts and assemblies for teams within the group. Responsibilities include modifying existing drawings/models, designing solutions from rough concepts, assembling and testing hardware, and developing junior staff. You will often work independently and interact with engineers, technicians, machinists, inspectors and customers as part of a team to transform concepts and designs into deliverable products typically needed on short timescales to meet Global Security mission deliverables. Most project work is conducted at the Q and SCI levels.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining additive manufacturing equipment in a research or prototyping environment.
  • Working experience using a high-level, 3D parametric CAD system to generate product definition (preferably either Creo/Pro-e or Solidworks).
  • Applied knowledge of common engineering principles related to design intent and manufacturability, including material selection, specifications, tolerancing, manufacturing and assembly requirements.
  • Demonstrated application of applied engineering principles, theory, math, and science to address technical challenges and research.
  • Experience working with in an industrial environment, governed by a formal safety and security processes.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment with engineers, scientists, technicians, and machinists from different disciplines and across organizations.
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills.

Training/Certifications: Professional certifications such as Certified Solidworks Associate\Professional or the PTC Creo certification are highly desired.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Skills
  • Experience working with multiple additive manufacturing methods and materials.
  • Knowledge in one or more of the following areas: vacuum and pressure system operation, mechanical fabrication, mechanical assembly, and equipment troubleshooting.
  • Experience collaborating and working across organizations and disciplines during design process.
  • Experience with configuration management, CAD file storage solutions and data management tools such as PDMlink or similar.
  • Experience in the application of work planning and control, and industry practices/standards.
  • Experience working in a classified environment with associated computing systems, material handling requirements, and facility limitations.
  • Experience providing technical direction to other staff including technicians, design/drafting personnel, machinists, or administrative staff.
  • Active Q or SCI clearances.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
