ESHQ Learning Specialist 1

What You Will Do

As a Learning Specialist 1 and member of the Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality Program Office (ESHQ-PO), you will support Los Alamos National Laboratory's ESHQ training programs. You will collaborate with subject matter experts and program owners to design, develop, and deliver training in accordance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other regulatory and contractual requirements.

This role spans the full training lifecycle-from design and development through delivery and evaluation-to ensure quality and compliance. You will apply adult learning principles to create and deliver engaging classroom, self-study, and e-learning content. The position includes providing live instruction for Laboratory employees and developing asynchronous and web-based materials.

You will work under supervision, contribute to team and organizational goals, and provide solutions to problems requiring analysis of multiple factors. This entry-level role receives detailed direction on new assignments, with work reviewed for accuracy, judgment, and overall adequacy. Duties may involve work in a variety of operational environments.

Job Duties

  • Make safety and security an integral part of every task, maintaining required training and stopping work when conditions are unsafe or insecure.
  • Contribute to organizational goals and objectives.
  • Partner with subject matter experts and program owners to ensure training programs meet Laboratory needs and comply with regulatory and contractual requirements.
  • Interpret and apply regulations and policies to maintain training compliance.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of procedures, forms, templates, rosters, and lesson plans.
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of classroom, self-study, and e-learning materials that are high quality and compliant.
  • Apply training methods and concepts in varied operational environments.
  • Conduct classroom and hands-on instruction.
  • Support knowledge preservation, capture, and transfer initiatives as needed.
  • Promote a respectful, inclusive work environment free from discrimination and harassment.
  • Support external grantee and vendor instructors by coordinating logistics, assisting during delivery, and ensuring consistency with Laboratory training standards and requirements.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Developing knowledge of Laboratory policies and procedures related to training.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with standard software applications (e.g., Microsoft Office).
  • Demonstrated skill and experience in presenting to classroom-sized audiences.
  • Basic understanding of adult learning theory and performance-based training methods.
  • Familiarity with document control and records management.
  • Basic understanding of OSHA, EPA, DOT, and related regulatory standards.
  • Ability to participate in and coordinate complex classroom scheduling, including selecting locations, determining frequency, and aligning schedules to meet Laboratory training demands.
  • Awareness of process improvement concepts.
  • Strong commitment to cultivating a positive and productive work environment through respect and professionalism.

Training/Certifications: Must complete LANL's Training Staff Qualification Program (TSPQ) within three months of hire to become a qualified Learning Specialist.

Education/Experience:
Associate's Degree in a related field and 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Background in safety-related work
  • Experience delivering live classroom instruction

Work Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
