Fire Protection Engineer (Nuclear Facility Engineer 1/2)

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facility Engineer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Within this job, the successful candidate will have to opportunity to support the Laboratory's mission by performing total fire protection reviews for a LANL facilities including sprinkler design, fire alarm design and passive fire protection design from the AHJ approver role. Fire Protection Engineers will work on dynamic teams to complete collaborative full system design review solutions through mentoring, calculations, and leadership to meet the needs of a diverse customer base. Nuclear Facility Engineer Level 1 ($87,200-$142,500)

Nuclear Facilities Engineer (Fire Protection Engineer) 1 will work with nuclear and non-nuclear facility systems and accepted methods for mitigation of risk from fire. The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties of this position, but are not necessarily limited to on-site fire protection system evaluations, analyze life safety requirements for new and existing buildings, including building code compliance, occupancy determination, occupant load calculations, and egress analysis. This is an entry level position where the candidate will gain experience and education toward becoming a qualified FPE under DOE qualification requirements.

Nuclear Facility Engineer Level 2 ($96,100-$159,000)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level Nuclear Facilities Engineer (Fire Protection Engineer) 2 will work with nuclear and non-nuclear facility systems and accepted methods for mitigation of risk from fire. The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties of this position, but are not necessarily limited to prevent and/or reduce fire consequences, reduce loss of life and property impacts of fire by applied engineering fundamentals, research, fire hazard analyses, detection and suppression of fires. Advanced knowledge of public and industrial fire department organizations, and must be familiar with industry technical codes, standards, and practices to ensure DOE liabilities are protected from inherent risks of fire.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Knowledge of nuclear facility engineering in one or more of the following, nuclear criticality safety analysis, safety basis, system engineer, project engineer, or design engineer.
  • Knowledge of nuclear facility engineering work planning and control methods.
  • Knowledge of new and existing non-reactor facility structural engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of computer-aided engineering tools to solve operations-based engineering problems Ability to apply standard and specialized engineering and scientific, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques to contribute to risk and hazard analyses for nuclear and non-nuclear facilities
  • Ability to learn about nuclear and non-nuclear facility systems and accepted methods for mitigation of risks from fire.
  • Ability to contribute to the preparation and presentation of high quality fire safety documents under the appropriate level of supervision and mentorship
  • This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Section, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions

Additional Job Requirements for higher level 2:
  • Must have proven technical knowledge of risk assessment methodologies, as well as experience in performing, applying, and reviewing fire hazard analysis.
  • Experience performing fire hazard analysis, knowledge of applicable DOE Standards and DOE Orders, and experience in working with these Standards and Orders
  • Experience managing risk assessment tasks and writing fire protection documents

Education/Experience at lower level 1:

Position requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and 0 to 2 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. A Degree in Fire Protection Engineering is highly desired.

This position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job. DOE 426.2 requires a BS degree, 2 years job related experience and 1 year non-reactor nuclear experience for technical support personnel who perform work independently at nuclear facilities. The Engineer 1 position would be expected to be able to obtain the nuclear experience on the job if they do not have it upon hire before becoming fully-qualified.

Education/Experience at higher level 2:

Position requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree or a degree in Fire Protection Engineering is highly desired.

This position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job. DOE 426.2 requires a BS degree, 2 years job related experience and 1 year non-reactor nuclear experience for technical support personnel who perform work independently at nuclear facilities. The Nuclear Facility Engineer 3 position would be expected to be able to obtain the nuclear experience on the job if they do not have it upon hire before becoming fully-qualified.

Training/Certifications: Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Working knowledge of industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.
  • Working knowledge of project and process engineering practices.
  • Sound knowledge of Engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and appropriate standards.
  • Experience working with administering Fire Protection Programs and/or AHJ activities related to fire protection.

Additional Details

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).
