Machine Design, Installation and Maintenance Technician (Research Tec 3/4)

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Research Technician 3 or Research Technician 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The High Explosives (HE) Fabrication and Disposition Group (M-8) in the Dynamic Experiments (M) Division is seeking a qualified Research Technician that will assist in the research, design, installation, modification, repair and ongoing preventative maintenance of industrial fabrication equipment used to press, machine and inspect HE. The successful candidate will have a diverse background in complex equipment including the following system components: electrical, mechanical, pneumatics, vacuum, pressure systems, safety interlock and other critical system components that are critical to high consequences of safety. Becoming qualified to work on all aspects of the highly specialized equipment will be essential and job specific training will be provided. You will have an opportunity to develop a diverse skillset and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders on a daily basis.

Research Technician 3 ($59,500 - $93,100)

The successful candidate will:
  • Work under direct supervision to perform basic equipment installation and troubleshooting of industrial fabrication equipment
  • Perform preventative maintenance activities to predetermined procedures
  • Acquire and maintain pertinent certifications and qualifications to support installation and maintenance of specialized HE fabrication equipment.
  • Occasional overtime may be required.

Research Technician 4 ($65,700 - $104,400)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the Research Technician 4 will be required to:
  • Perform industrial equipment installation and troubleshooting with minimal oversight
  • Work from electrical schematics and mechanical drawings to install custom equipment within a HE environment
  • Lead corrective maintenance activities on complex fabrication equipment

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Basic knowledge and experience working safely with electrical equipment powered by 480VAC or 208VAC facility power.
  • Demonstrated experience fabricating, assembling, installing and testing electronic, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, vacuum or mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to work with a diverse team of professional technicians supporting multiple concurrent team tasks with changing programmatic priorities.
  • Demonstrated record of dependability, reliability, and commitment to long-term needs of the job duties and programmatic goals of the position and organization.
  • Demonstrated commitment in the areas of safety, security, quality and environment.
  • Ability to work a 4 day per week, 10 hour per day work schedule

Additional Job Requirements for Research Technician 4:
In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Research Technician 4 level requires:
  • Demonstrated experience reading and following mechanical and electrical schematics.
  • Demonstrated experience performing installation, maintenance, and repairs on complex equipment and systems with multiple subsystems that have safety significant controls.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot and repair equipment at the system level in the field and at component level in the laboratory using a variety of electronics bench instrumentation, such as digital oscilloscopes, DVMs, pulse generators, etc.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience repairing electronic, electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in maintaining system and process documentation.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.

Education Required for Research Technician 3: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education Required for Research Technician 4: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience operating fabrication equipment including mills, lathes, saws, and grinders
  • Experience working in a facility supporting equipment that fabricates hazardous materials
  • Experience in the maintenance of manual and CNC equipment
  • Experience in the installation and repair of camera systems to include coax, CAT 5 and fiber communications

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).
