Nuclear Incident Response Training Coordinator (Science/Engineering Project Leader 2/3)

What You Will Do
The Nuclear Incident Response Training Coordinator (Science/Engineering Project Leader 2/3) coordinates training events and delivers training aids for the Nuclear Incident Response Program. This role encompasses curriculum development, course delivery, and training aid design definition. Daily responsibilities include organizing meetings and design reviews, documenting project progress, developing spend plans and managing budgets, negotiating scopes of work, and coordinating field-based training events.
As the Nuclear Incident Response Training Coordinator, you play a critical role in preparing national response teams for effective, timely reactions to nuclear incidents. You ensure that all training programs are comprehensive, up-to-date, and align with best practices and regulatory standards.
Superior written and oral communication skills are essential for this position. The coordinator interfaces with a diverse customer base and contributors from operational and technical divisions across LANL and other national laboratories. The ability to manage conflict and negotiate resolutions productively is crucial.
The coordinator spends a significant portion of their time in the field to support training events. Superior organizational skills, the capacity to thrive in a fast-paced setting, and a commitment to safety and security are vital. Knowledge of the Nuclear Incident Response community and policies for handling and shipping classified information and hardware are highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to create high-quality training content and aids.
  • Negotiate with stakeholders to ensure resource availability, identify procurement and contracting needs, and complete project deliverables within defined scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Coordinate training course delivery, including scheduling, logistics, and participant engagement.
  • Evaluate training effectiveness and improve programs as needed.
  • Maintain training records and reporting.
  • Foster strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify project risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Report project status and issues to the program manager and LANL senior management.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Science/Engineering Project Leader 2 ($104,100 - $172,200)

  • 5+ years of experience in Nuclear Incident Response programs, training/adult education, or project management.
  • Proven ability to develop and deliver effective training programs.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Proficiency in training needs assessment, curriculum design, and adult learning principles.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which typically requires U.S. citizenship.

Science/Engineering Project Leader 3 ($125,200 - $211,300)
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • 8+ years of experience in Nuclear Incident Response programs, training coordination, or project management.
  • Expert level experience in developing training curriculum.
  • Experience with regulatory polices.

Education/Experience for Science/Engineering Project Leader 2: Position requires a bachelor's degree in a science or engineering related field, from an accredited institution and 5 years directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience for Science/Engineering Project Leader 3: Position requires a bachelor's degree in a science or engineering related field, from an accredited institution and 8 years directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Project Management Professional certification.
  • Experience working with classified and hazardous programs, with the ability to independently identify and propose mitigations to risks.
  • Familiarity with the Nuclear Incident Response community and related regulations.
  • Experience handling classified information and hardware.
  • Experience with formal safety and security programs.
  • Active Q Clearance.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q
(Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility Requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test
: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
