What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Operations Support Specialist 3/4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Operations Support Specialist 3 $85,900 - $139,900
The Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division is responsible for providing engineering support to aid in safe operation and modification of Laboratory's Nuclear Facilities. The successful candidate will be a member of the Project Controls Group supporting the modification team and will report to the Project Controls Team Leader. Modification provides collaborative, innovative designs to solve problems or improve safety and non-safety systems at LANL's primary plutonium facility to maintain the LANL mission. The Operations Support Specialist will be responsible for ensuring the robustness of the Configuration Management program by implementing key performance indicators for the design processes at TA-55, analyzing the effectiveness, completeness, and identifying additional corrective actions required for continuous improvement of the PFE design process. Use your personal leadership, effective communication and LANL knowledge to support daily operations specific functions to PFE Division, modification engineering sub-area, and throughout PFE Division as needed.

Operations Support Specialist 4 $85,900 - $139,900

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level:

  • Provides expert guidance in interpreting Laboratory policies impacting organizational to ensure compliance.
  • Responsible for researching new strategies to ensure completeness of our delivered engineering documents.
  • Analyzes data output for trends and/or any deviations for ongoing assessment and ensures accuracy of metrics.
  • Provides expert level input and guidance in the development of operational and administrative policies procedures, and reports.
  • Oversees the implementation of documentation systems and ensures compliance with all applicable document control and records management activities and security/compliance implications.

  • Attention to detail with high level accuracy.
  • Experience adapting to changing priorities/multiple tasks to meet customer deadlines.

  • Must possess strong personal leadership and teamwork skills.
  • Experience making independent decisions within areas of responsibility.
  • Must be able to operate independently and must exercise individual initiative to demonstrate successful completion of assigned tasks.
  • Experience in providing support for area walkdowns


Additional Job Requirements for Operations Support Specialist 4:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Advanced experience with various softwares such as Adobe, Microsoft Word/Excel, Outlook, PPT, Teams, etc.
  • Advanced experience using software such as Excel for data visualization. (Charts, pivot tables, etc.)
  • Must be able to help facilitate process and procedural changes within areas of responsibility.
  • Experience making independent decisions within areas of responsibility.
  • Attention to detail with high level accuracy when reviewing technical and general engineering documents.
  • Ability to evaluate changing priorities and redirect resources as necessary.


Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.

Education/Experience at higher level: Requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be expected.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledgeable of TA-55 Facilities and/or policies and procedures
  • Broad knowledge of LANL Database systems
  • Active Q Clearance




Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule: Work is fully on site with flexible schedules.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

New-Employment Drug Test:
The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Term position: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.
