The Engineering Services Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security missions. This position is within the Engineering Services Division (ES) and is assigned to the Institutional Project Delivery (ES-IPD) Group. This group is responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at Los Alamos National Laboratory as pertains to design of infrastructure and buildings systems for institutional facilities. The Pressure Safety team within ES-IPD is an Institutional support group that supports lab employees responsible for pressure systems spread across 38 square miles of the LANL site.
You will serve a variety of roles as an Institutional-level Pressure Safety Engineer. This may include :
• Pressure safety designer providing input to mechanical designers to aid in pressure safety compliance for projects
• Interdisciplinary technical reviewer or design verifier for internally or externally designed projects
• Subject Matter Expert for the entire lifecycle of programmatic pressure systems
• Reviewer for procurement pre-purchase approvals for boilers, pressure vessels, pressure regulators, and relief devices
As a senior level engineer you will be required to develop and promote technical leadership, quality, and safety values, to coworkers, project stakeholders, external auditors, vendors, construction companies, and subcontractors.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
• Advanced technical experience in design engineering with expertise in pressure systems
• Demonstrate the ability to define objectives of assignments and determine the approach, methods, and procedures needed to achieve the desired goal
• Demonstrate ability to interpret and apply codes, standards, laws, and regulations related to boiler and pressure vessel safety
• Analyze, summarize and/or review data; reports findings; interprets results and makes recommendations
• Ability to understand engineering systems and perform calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to conventional and non-conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems
• Ability to achieve results in a matrix organizational structure
• Proficiency with personal computers
• Ability to develop reports for senior managers
• Ability to communicate well, both written and verbally
• Experience and knowledge of overpressure protection calculations and sizing of pressure relief devices
• Experience with codes and standards such as:
o ASME B31.3 or ASME B31.9
o ASME B&PVC Section VIII, Div. 1
o ASME B&PVC Section XIII
• Ability to collaboratively problem solve, show commitment, and function well in a team environment
• Ability to apply engineering judgement to facility and operations-based engineering challenges
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
Desired Qualifications:
• Knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principles and procedures.
• Current NCEES Professional Engineering License in Mechanical Engineering (any US State).
• Experience leading a team and / or organization.
• Ability in coaching and mentoring junior engineers.
• Familiarity with the pressure safety requirements of 10CFR851, DOE Directives, and industry codes and standards invoked as referenced by such Directives. Examples include DOE Order 420.1C Facility Safety; ASME BPVC and B31 series piping codes; NBIC; and applicable NFPA Codes and Standards.
Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
