Project Management and Data Analysis Project Lead / Technical Project Manager 1/2

What You Will Do

The Science Resource Office (SRO) is seeking energetic, customer-focused and highly motivated applicants for the position of Technical Project Manager (TPM) 2. In this TPM role, you would join a diverse and goal-oriented group of peers supporting multiple programs dedicated to giving researchers a knowledge advantage in their work, facilitating collaboration inside and outside the Lab, and other ways of facilitating knowledge generation and stewardship in support of Laboratory missions.

The selected candidate must be an excellent problem-solver, anticipating challenges or obstacles and resolving them with minimal supervision. This position focuses on exceptional project management of multiple activities including issues that arise, deliverables, and programmatic action items. The selected candidate will work collaboratively with stakeholders throughout the Directorate and across the Lab. This position requires initiative, professionalism, discretion, flexibility, and the ability to think strategically. It also requires flexibility in work schedule to accommodate essential deadlines when needed.

This position will be filled at either the Technical Project Manager 1/Technical Project Manager 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Technical Project Manager 1 $79,200 - $129,000

This position will be responsible with assisting project management team leader with the training and reporting aspects of the project. They will also be involved with overseeing a collaboration space used by organizations across the Lab to hold events - some highly visible - with both external guests and internal staff. The selected candidate will also assist in the coordination of meetings, webpage design and other activities for programs and groups such as the directors colloquium series, the LANL fellows committee, and institutional STEM award programs.

Technical Project Manager 2 $96,100 - $159,000

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level this position will primarily help design, build and maintain the R&D Project Management (PM) program, designed to increase the likelihood that researchers achieve their projects goals. The selected candidate will play a key role in the following activities:
  • User Support - Assist users of the new R&D PM system and analyze feedback to (1) help decide future system and training enhancements, and (2) identify future projects that will meet researchers' needs and allow them to focus on their scientific goals.
  • System Development - Work with users, R&D PM system vendors and Lab personnel to design, build and test system and training enhancements.
  • Program Development - Help develop new activities that will give researchers more PM knowledge and tools, e.g., monthly seminars and tool demos.
  • Program Maintenance - Identify and implement efficiencies into the internal processes used to maintain the R&D PM projects and activities.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Project Management

Demonstrated experience leading small to mid-size projects with team members that often report to other organizations. This demonstrated experience must working with stakeholders and team members to develop and get buy-in to the project goals; motivating the team to work together to achieve the project goals; facilitating communications between the team members to help them coordinate their work; monitoring and controlling the project to ensure that the project will be delivered on schedule and at budget, and issues are identified and handled early; reporting to and consulting with key stakeholders regularly.

Status and Reporting

Advanced ability to effectively gather, compile, and interpret data derived from multiple sources to produce reliable metrics, trends, and forecasts. Independently able to produce project plans for multiple small projects and lead weekly/monthly/quarterly status meetings, ensuring timely completion.

Advanced ability in planning and executing to defined due dates, documenting actions completed, providing status on actions completed and completing all work tasks independently with no error.

Collaboration

Demonstrated experience collaborating with others that includes communicating clearly, actively listening to others, taking responsibility for mistakes, and respecting the diversity of staff with internal and external organizations and agencies. Experience interacting with senior managers and executives. Demonstrated success exercising initiative and working to resolve complex issues in a manner that fosters institutional values, staff productivity, and customer satisfaction.

Strategic Communication

Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills as evidenced by internal and/or external interactions, seminars, briefings, and presentations. Demonstrated effective communication with both external organizations and internal staff and management that fosters healthy, productive working relationships and accommodates multiple and/or complex points of view.

Problem Solving

Advanced and demonstrated experience in identifying, researching and analyzing the source of problems and finding effective and innovative solutions that balance between satisfying the customer, maintaining healthy, productive working relationships, and adhering to accepted business practices.

Customer Service

Exceptional customer service skills and the ability to provide clear, concise support and guidance to others in sometimes stressful situations. Ability to interact professionally with all types of personnel, including external interfaces and executive management.

Additional Job Requirements for Technical Project Manager 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Master level work in Project Management, business management or related field or Project Management Certification Desired

Education/Experience: at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience: at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A Project Management Institute certification is preferred for this level.

Desired Qualifications:

PMI Certification

Project Management Institute (PMI) certification

Event coordination and assistance

Experience setting up and executing events that includes scheduling resources; setting up rooms and AV equipment or managing online meeting systems; and registering and managing attendees, where required

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.
