What You Will Do

The Operational Safety & Compliance Group (PSS-2) is seeking a highly motivated Quality Engineer to engage in impactful quality assurance opportunities. The selected candidate will support PSS-2's Storage Safety and Engineering team. The Quality Engineer will continuously support the implementation of best-in-class safety and nuclear materials storage management program while assisting to reduce operational and programmatic risk in quality assurance and compliance at the Institutional and Weapons Production level.

As the Quality Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring quality requirements are incorporated into the Storage Safety and Engineering teams' approach in support of DOE M 441.1-1. Regular contact with other internal and external resources to the PSS-2 Group will be necessary to execute responsibilities successfully. Leveraging a broad technical background, the team develops state-of-the-art deployable solutions in support of container surveillance processes and enhancements by adding useful data to support container health assessments. As a member of the team, you will be actively involved in a diverse set of activities supporting core programmatic needs and directly impacting national security by providing guidance on nuclear material storage container surveillance and procurements to provide support against fragmented delivery of products.

The position requires an experienced professional with a full understanding of specialized areas and an advanced to expert knowledge of quality programs, along with being able to resolve a wide range of issues in creative ways. The candidate will participate in nonconformance reporting, closures, and the corrective action processes, and will network with quality professionals as needed. The candidate works under limited direction while receiving general instructions on new assignments. All work is evaluated upon completion to ensure objectives have been met, while demonstrating good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Quality Engineer 2 ($94,500 - $154,600)
  • Demonstrated and thorough knowledge and application of nuclear codes and standards. For example: 10 CFR 830 Subpart A, DOE Order 414.1D, national consensus standard ASME NQA-1-2008/ASME NQA-1a-2009 Addenda to ASME NQA-1 - 2008, and U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Regulatory Guide Series, Los Alamos National Laboratory QAP SD330, or equivalent.
  • Proficient technical knowledge of the application of ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code for the procurement, fabrication, inspection, testing and In-Service inspection & evaluation of Pressure Vessels and Piping.
  • Experience participating in and supporting quality assessments, surveillances, audits and/or Non-Conformance disposition and closure.
  • Ability to understand and interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, specifications, and schematics.
  • Demonstrated ability to accomplish technical tasks while working independently, as well as in a team environment, and ability to interact effectively with all levels of personnel to build trust, gain consensus, and resolve conflicts. Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills and strong organizational skills.
  • Proficient knowledge application and sufficient experience to comprehend specified requirements for these disciplines; including Welding, Nondestructive Testing, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance and various Mechanical and Material Testing methods and applications.
  • Proficient technical knowledge of the application of engineering, procurement, and construction practices sufficient to comprehend specified requirements for these disciplines; including Commercial Grade Dedication (CGD) and application of the graded approach in an NQA-1 environment.

Desired Qualifications:

Q clearance

Quality Standards: Knowledge of 10 CFR 830 with experience in nuclear processing and/or high hazard facility operating requirements, safety/authorization basis and/or Conduct of Operations planning and execution.

Certification: Nationally recognized quality engineering related certification such as American Society of Quality's Certified Quality Engineer, Reliability Engineer, or equivalent.

Quality Assurance:
  • Knowledgeable of quality system requirements, manufacturing and processes.
  • Certified Welding Inspector - American Welding Society (AWS-CWI)
  • Current certification or previous certifications with Helium leak testing, Piping or Pressure Vessel Inspection, and/or Mechanical Inspections

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation

Work Location: The work location for this position is telework and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Telework is defined as working from offsite but within 2hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite may be periodically necessary. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
