What You Will Do

Join the Metrology Program and Calibration Laboratory (MP&CL) and support the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) mission to solve national security challenges through scientific excellence. The MP&CL provides National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) traceable calibrations for LANL programs, operations, and research organizations that use measurement and test equipment (M&TE) to take high impact measurements.

The MP&CL performs dimensional, electrical, and physical calibrations. We strive to provide the highest quality calibrations and exceptional customer service to ensure high impact measurements at LANL are reliable and accurate whether the measurement is taken on a laboratory bench top or firing mound during an explosives experiment. Providing this service requires a dedicated and committed team with a common goal - to safely support LANL's mission by providing superior calibration services to our customers


This position will be filled at either the Metrology Engineer 3 or 4
level, depending on the skills and experience of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The mid-career metrology engineer is an essential part of the Metrology Program and Calibration Lab metrology team responsible for the practical application of measurement science engineering concepts and principles. In this job position, you will be responsible for applying engineering principles to measurement science activities. Metrology Engineering duties include:
  • Maintaining calibration equipment operability by ensuring preventive maintenance activities are scheduled, performed, and documented;
  • Deploying new calibration equipment/instrumentation to include set-up and operability verification and validation;
  • Providing calibration guidance based on engineering principles and concepts;
  • Developing calibration and/or measurement techniques for moderately complex/complex new or one-of-a-kind instruments, equipment, and/or systems;
  • Developing calibration procedures, uncertainty budgets, test uncertainty ratios;
  • Preparing and maintaining calibration areas for National Voluntary Laboratory Program (NVLAP) accreditation in support of management initiatives to expand the MP&CL scope of accreditation; and
  • Working collaboratively with all members of the Standard and Calibration staff to include management, metrology staff and customers to provide excellent customer service.

We are looking for an enthusiastic engineer with experience in measurement science. The successful candidate will be able to positively and proactively manage short and long-term challenges to ensure the Metrology Program and Calibration Laboratory meets requirements and provides our LANL customers with the highest quality calibrations and superior customer service.

Metrology Engineer 3 ($94,100 - $155,700)

The successful candidate will be required to:
  • Apply and interpret advanced measurement science engineering and scientific principles, techniques, methods, and technically sound judgement to provide solutions for a diverse range of complex and/or ambiguous metrology problems where engineering analysis of situations or data requires in-depth evaluation of variable factors.
  • Lead calibration methodology development or improvement to include analysis, validation and verification of repeatability and reproducibility to ensure technically defensible calibration results in assigned areas.
  • Develop and maintain calibration procedures in assigned area and collaboratively supports the development and maintenance of calibration procedures in all areas by sharing engineering knowledge and expertise.
  • Influence advancement and improvement in MP&CL technical calibration capabilities such as increasing calibration ranges, reducing measurement uncertainty, etc.
  • Enhance technical and professional expertise of junior staff through active mentoring and training.
  • Ensure compliance with Laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Model a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment and that supports cooperation, teamwork, and resource sharing.

Metrology Engineer 4 ($113,100 -$190,900)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the Metrology Engineer 4 will be required to:
  • Develop innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques, and approaches to address complex and specialized measurement problems. Identify, promote, and develop new technical capabilities within the MP&CL.
  • Lead mentoring and training for technical staff. Serves as a technical resource for MP&CL staff and customers.
  • Collaborate with MP&CL customers as a metrology expert to enhance and improve measurement integrity for programs and projects.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Advanced knowledge of, experience in, and ability to practically apply measurement science engineering concepts and principles in one calibration area (electrical, dimensional, or physical).
  • Advanced experience applying engineering calculations to complex measurements, measurement uncertainties, and measurement problems.
  • Advanced experience in data analysis applied to troubleshooting measurement problems that may involve the calibration instrumentation, systems, or the unit under test; or applied to improving measurement system capability, or solving complex measurement problems.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring and/or training of technical staff in technical best practices for obtaining repeatable high consequence electrical, dimensional, or physical measurement data.
  • Advanced experience documenting and presenting technical basis for engineering determinations related to measurement verification, validation, measurement system operability, etc.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with at all levels and across organizations.

Additional Job Requirements for (Metrology Engineer 4):

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Metrology Engineer 4 level requires:
  • Expert knowledge of, experience in, and ability to practically apply measurement science engineering concepts and principles broadly across more than one calibration area (electrical, dimensional, and/or physical).
  • Expert experience using engineering calculations related to highly complex measurements, measurement uncertainties, and measurement problems.
  • Expert experience in data analysis applied to troubleshooting measurement instrumentation/systems, improving measurement system capability, or solving highly complex measurement problems.
  • Demonstrated experience leading mentoring and/or training of technical staff in technical best practices for obtaining repeatable and reproducible high consequence electrical, dimensional, or physical measurement data.
  • Expert experience documenting and presenting technical basis for engineering determinations related to measurement verification, validation, measurement system operability, etc.

Desired Skills:
  • Experience working in a production-type fast paced environment with customer driven deadlines.
  • Knowledge of calibration laboratory requirements such as ISO 17025, NQA-1, and NAP-24.
  • Recognized as a Subject Matter Expert in measurement science engineering.
  • Experience using measurement system software such as Labview, Compass, MetCal, etc.

Lower Level Education Required: BS in engineering or related field directly applicable to metrology and a minimum of 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Additional consideration may be given to professionally recognized training and certifications in related fields.

Higher Level Education Required: BS/MS degree in engineering or related field directly applicable to metrology and a minimum of 12 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Additional consideration may be given to professionally recognized training and certifications in related fields.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level).
