Scientist 3/4 | Los Alamos, NM | Los Alamos National Laboratory

Scientist 3/4

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Scientist 3 level or Scientist 4 level based on the qualifications of the successful candidate(s).

The Applied and Fundamental Physics Group (P-2) at LANL is a diverse group of experimental physicists, engineers, technicians, and students engaged in a range of fundamental and applied research in nuclear physics beyond the Standard Model, neutrinos, dark matter, weapons physics, plasma physics, and fluid dynamics. We support a diverse program that includes scientists of many nationalities, participation in experiments worldwide, sponsorship of workshops and conferences, and classified experiments and analysis.

The successful candidate will be part of a team that re-analyzes data collected from underground nuclear tests (UGTs) conducted before the implementation of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. Research methods that are being considered and/or used in this effort include machine learning, advanced uncertainty methods, and real-time data interconnectivity. If appropriate skills exist, the candidate may become involved in other efforts within the group as well.

Scientist 3 ($115,500-$194,900)

As a Scientist 3, you will focus on applying modern analysis techniques to existing test data, including machine learning and novel uncertainty quantification. You will work with scientists from around the laboratory to interpret and utilize these new analyses and data, including consideration of the underlying physics such as material strength, turbulence, equations of state and so on, all of which contributes significantly to the certification of weapons systems. Analysis of data is a major task, but you may have opportunities to contribute to other experimental or analysis efforts within the division consistent with your skillset.

Collaboration, teamwork, and mentoring are critical for the success of this work, and you are expected to be able to negotiate scope and acquire internal/external funding if the need arises.

Scientist 4 ($138,700-$240,500)

In addition to the duties outlined above, as a Scientist 4 working in this area you will be expected to contribute to the leadership of the effort, to help develop and execute the strategic vision for the future of analysis methods. You will be contributing substantially to the development of new methods for analysis and new ways of best making use of the data in conjunction with customers. You will be expected to not only provide mentoring yourself, but also to more broadly coordinate mentoring of team members and to provide supervision of team members as needed. You need to be able to effectively represent the effort to upper management and/or program customers (especially XTD Division), and to negotiate program directions with them.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:

Scientist 3

  • Demonstrated success in data interpretation and processing, including careful attention to detail and the ability to document clearly and understandably the steps taken in work done
  • Excellent data communication skills, demonstrated by the ability to write clear, concise summaries of work done and to give clear oral presentations
  • Excellent data analysis skills with a strong understanding of statistics and experimental data error analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to write proposals and secure funding
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in leading teams and providing mentorship in a technical area
  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship

Scientist 4

In addition to the requirements listed above, the candidate will need
  • Advanced Leadership: Coordinating and directing a scientific effort with regards to technical activities and communications, and ability to effectively communicate to customers.
  • Advanced Data Interpretation and Processing: Acting independently to apply the data in novel ways.
  • Accomplished Technical Expert: Recognition as a technical expert in more than one of the desired skill areas as documented by professional accomplishments, publications, reports, etc.
  • Plans to expand funding: Contribute to leading the project in obtaining new funding sources
  • Ability and desire to mentor incoming team members in analysis methods.

Desired Skills
  • Active DOE Q clearance
  • Familiarity with weapons physics
  • Experience with diagnostics
  • Demonstrated experience archiving data
  • Familiarity with particle and radiation detectors
  • Ability to program in IDL, Matlab, and/or Python
  • Experience in analysis of complex experiments

Education/Experience Required:

Scientist 3

This position requires a minimum of a Master's degree (MS) in nuclear, plasma, or atomic physics, applied mathematics or closely related fields and 6 years of related experience. A Ph.D. and post-doctoral experience is preferred.

Scientist 4

This position requires a minimum of a Master's degree (MS) in nuclear, plasma, or atomic physics, applied mathematics or closely related fields and 12 years of related experience. A Ph.D. and post-doctoral experience is preferred.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

COVID Vaccine:

The COVID vaccine is mandatory for all Laboratory employees, on-site contractors, and on-site subcontractors unless granted an accommodation under applicable state or federal law. This requirement will apply to those working on-site, those teleworking, and all new hires.
