Thermonuclear Plasma Experiments Research Technician (Research Tec 3)

What You Will Do


The P-4 Thermonuclear Plasma Physics group in Physics Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a Research Tec Level 3to support experimental research in intense radiation sources, magneto-inertial fusion, laboratory astrophysics, and basic plasma science. The successful applicant will be expected to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, small-team environment. They will contribute to research in discovery and applied plasma science, build credentials for a career in the national laboratories, academic labs, or technical industry, and gain broad experience in experimental design and operations. There may also be opportunities to collaborate with other ongoing P-4 efforts at facilities both at LANL and off-site (see "Where you will work" below).

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:


The successful applicant will work with team members to build and execute plasma physics experiments and manage lab spaces for safe and efficient operations. They will be expected to:
  • Work in a team environment and exhibit collaborative behavior, coordinating with administrative and lab facilities, shipping and receiving, academic collaborators, subcontractors, etc.
  • Build experimental mechanical infrastructure, which includes the use of hand and power tools, lifting and carrying heavy objects (30+ pounds), climbing stairs and ladders
  • Use mechanical material handling equipment such as pallet jacks, dollies, carts, etc., and be capable of obtaining forklift/crane certifications
  • Maintain and organize scientific instruments, tools, and laboratory spaces
  • Work on electrical systems including wiring, cable runs, soldering, working with circuits, troubleshooting, etc.
  • Work on electromechanical systems including vacuum systems, pressure systems, control systems, relays, interlocks, etc.
  • Understand hardware and quality requirements, interface with vendors and machine shops to ensure hardware and quality needs are met
  • Understand and adhere to all LANL and industry regulatory guidance and governance specific to experimental activities (e.g., when undertaking work that requires control for safety and security, ensuring work complies with required standards/code, maintain lab safety-related work authorization with accompanying documentation, training, and signage)
  • Maintain security training and ensure work is being done in a secure manner
  • Provide functional and operational direction to R&D support staff and other workers (e.g., students, laborers, salvage operations, etc.)

Education/Experience: Position typically requires an Associate's degree in a relevant field and three years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Desired Qualifications:


If the applicant does not currently possess these skills, it is anticipated that learning will take place on-the-job. They will eventually be expected to:
  • Use computer design tools such as CAD
  • Work with team members to stand up and maintain data systems, security cameras, etc.
  • Participate in the hardware design process with team members, investigate alternative approaches and recommend solutions to problems
  • Design and construct electromagnetic shielding and harden electronic systems
  • Build and safely operate pulsed power systems
  • Set up and safely work with intense lasers and radiation sources
  • Build and maintain diagnostics and experimental subsystems (e.g., electrical and magnetic probes, optical systems, cables and shielding), organize and integrate subsystems into the overall experiment

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
