The Plutonium Facility at LANL was deemed the Nation’s Plutonium Center of Excellence for Research & Development by the NNSA in 2009. Not only are we home to the United States’ sole plutonium pit production capability, but we also support LANL’s mission to advance the understanding of the physical, mechanical and chemical properties of plutonium. Today, we are diligently working toward a new goal of manufacturing at least 30 pits per year by 2026—a task that not only includes significant infrastructure and equipment modernization but also ongoing science, research and development.
In addition to plutonium operations, we solve some of the nation’s most difficult national security problems by applying our world-class science, technology and engineering to help create solutions for climate change, fighting the spread of viruses such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic and understanding other material or scientific phenomena.
