The Beam Operations Team supports the Accelerator Operations and Technology (AOT) Division, within the Operations Group (AOT-OPS) and is responsible for operating the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center's (LANSCE) proton accelerator. We are seeking a qualified and experienced operator to serve as an Alternate Operations Shift Supervisor. This position requires working rotating shifts on a modified workweek schedule, 8-12 months a year.
Principal responsibilities will be:
• In the absence of the Operations Shift Supervisor (OSS), will take full responsibility for the safe and reliable operation of the accelerator and beam delivery complex while it is under their operational control.
• Establish, monitor, and maintain complex operating configurations within specified operating and safety envelopes.
• Operate all elements of the beam transport, acceleration and delivery systems including all ancillary systems required for LANSCE accelerator operation.
• Assist in troubleshooting and repair efforts.
• Serve as a focal point for communications among everyone involved with the LANSCE accelerator complex, including operators, scientists, engineers, technicians, administrators and experimenters. This also will include determining whom to contact in order to repair malfunctioning equipment.
• In the absence of the OSS, function as the Emergency Coordinator (EC) at the scene of an emergency until relieved by an appropriate controlling authority who is acting as Incident Commander (IC).
• Support the ongoing training and qualification of junior operators.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
• Advanced knowledge of accelerator operations procedures and policies that are used to determine appropriate action needed to resolve complex problems in a timely manner.
• Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply cross-disciplined (mechanical, electrical, radio frequency, instrumentation and control, and physics) knowledge and a practical understanding of equipment and systems theory and principles.
• Experience and demonstrated skill in recommending solutions to problems affecting systems and/or equipment.
• Demonstrated ability to foster open communication work collaboratively as part of a team.
• Willingness to accept a supervisory role in the absence of the Operations Shift Supervisor.
Training/Certifications: Must have completed and be current on the LANSCE Accelerator Operator Training Program
Education/Experience: Position requires an Associate's Degree in a related field and 7 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, additional training and/or certification may be expected.
Desired Qualifications:
• Current and extensive experience in the LANSCE control room as an accelerator operator.
• Willingness to take responsibility for crew's decisions and actions and to make improvements or changes as needed.
• Able to implement and adhere to well vetted conduct of operations principles while remaining flexible and forward thinking in order to drive continuous improvement and adapt to change.
• Strong attention to administrative details such as following operating procedures, ensuring training is complete and up-to-date, and training junior operators.
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Work Environment
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
