The job involves a range of responsibilities centered around system administration and security management. Key duties include managing, configuring, and maintaining RHEL-based servers and systems, while also implementing and enforcing cybersecurity protocols and best practices. The role requires developing and maintaining Salt automation scripts to optimize system and security management tasks. Scripting with Groovy is also part of the role, focusing on task automation and system performance enhancement. Troubleshooting complex system and security issues is another critical responsibility. Collaboration with various teams, including the Terminus team, CSIRT, NSOC, and other IT and security departments, is essential to maintain a robust security infrastructure and ensure timely incident responses.
ICE division consists of more than 350 talented Solution Architects, Computer Systems Professionals, and Cybersecurity Technical Staff employees who provide the varied Laboratory organizations with Information Technology experts who design, build, and support their mission-driven technical needs, on the unclassified and classified networks through several different service touchpoints. In addition, optimize the use of information technology, ensure seamless delivery and operation of IT services by monitoring system performance, applying configuration management practices, creating processes and standards for selection and implementation.
This position will be filled at either the Cyber Security Technical Staff 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Cyber Security Technical Staff 2 ($92,300-$151,000):
The ideal candidate should have strong experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), including installation, configuration, and maintenance of systems. Hands-on experience with Salt automation or similar RHEL automation tools for system configuration management and task automation is required. A solid understanding of cybersecurity best practices, including DISA STIGs, and practical experience securing systems, data, and networks is essential. The candidate must be able to quickly diagnose and resolve complex technical issues related to systems, security, and automation tools. Familiarity with monitoring tools such as CheckMK, Nagios, or similar products is also needed.
Cyber Security Technical Staff 3 ($112,000-$186,700):

The ideal candidate should be proficient in scripting to automate tasks, thereby enhancing system security and efficiency. Additionally, proficiency with Salt automation for system configuration management and task automation is required to streamline operations and improve system performance.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Experience in managing web server environments such as Apache, Nginx, or IIS.
- Strong Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) administration experience with a focus on cybersecurity.
- Experience in managing and supporting Atlassian products in a production environment.
- Experience with problem-solving and documenting within a fast-paced environment.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams resulting in mitigating security risks, addressing vulnerabilities across applications, and operating systems.
Additional Job Requirements for Cyber Security Technical Staff 3: In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
- Proficiency in database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery processes.
- Provide direction to junior staff.
- Experience with system monitory tools like CheckMk, Nagios, or similar products.
- Manage responsibilities with minimal supervision, demonstrating proactive problem-solving skills, effective decision-making, and self-direction.
Training/Certifications: None.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in a technical field and a minimum of 5 years' related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level post graduate work may be expected.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a technical field and a minimum of 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level post graduate work may be expected.
Desired Qualifications:
- Expert level knowledge in managing Jira, Confluence, and other Atlassian tools, ensuring integration and support within the organization.
- Oversee the lifecycle management of application certificates, including SSL/TLS certificates, from generation to deployment, ensuring secure communication between applications and systems.
- Experience in administrating security software in support of incident response and SOC functions in tools such as MatterMost, CROGL, or similar.
- Proficiency in Groovy for scripting tasks, automation, and performance improvements.
Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Telework is defined as working from offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite may be periodically necessary. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
