Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a Building Automation Systems (BAS) Controls Engineer to join our Automation and Predictive Technologies team within Maintenance and Site Services (MSS-APT). MSS-APT consists of a small, dynamic team of engineers and technicians that solve HVAC quandaries using data analysis, field investigations, analytic tools, and creativity. Our goal is to track down failed equipment and find opportunities to optimize controls in the service of comfort, productivity, and sustainability. We work directly with Operations and Maintenance by providing technological solutions and support for data collection, analysis, dashboarding, controls programming, design modifications, and small project execution and commissioning.
The BAS Controls Engineer position resides within Engineering Services Division Office (ES-DO) and will be deployed to MSS-APT. If you're eager to support the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission, this opportunity is for you!
This position will be filled at either the Engineering 3/4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Engineer 3 ($112,000 - $186,700)
The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties of this position, but are not necessarily limited to:
- Provide engineering field support, and expertise for BAS used in the daily operations and control of facility HVAC at LANL. Insure safe, reliable, and energy efficient operations and maintenance for all Building Automation Systems (Trane, Automated Logic, and Alerton) installed campus wide
- Program BAS databases and sequences of operation, monitor, troubleshoot and tune control systems resulting in optimized building equipment operation, energy utilization, indoor air quality and comfort. Modify programming and graphics as necessary
- Assist HVAC field and maintenance technicians in the installation, repair, replacement and testing of various components or systems. Provide advanced troubleshooting of comfort, energy, indoor air quality, and safety concerns related to HVAC systems and controls
- Work with Project Management, Construction, outside contractors, consultants, and controls vendors to install, network, import controls and sensor data points into the fault detection and diagnostics software platform for control systems and perform field device commissioning
- Manage BAS controls and equipment issues through software analytics and fault detection systems to create facility service requests (FSRs) for documenting maintenance requests
- Proficient in various building automation protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus, ARCnet, MS/TP) and have experience with system integration across different building subsystems
- Advanced understating of BAS IP networks and BACnet protocols (e.g. UDP architecture, BBMD tables, etc.)
- Remain current with state-of-the-art hardware, software, and technology
- Maintain policies, procedures, and configuration management for the control systems
- Investigate and recommend innovative engineering and maintenance and techniques to improve system operations, maintenance, and security
- Assist in the creation of policies, procedures, and configuration management for the control systems
- Contribute to the development procedures and standards and help improve workflows within the BAS team and Operations
- Perform design review and provide input on new building automation controls projects that include laboratories, offices, and mixed uses
- Design and develop dashboards for BAS Engineering and its clients
- Perform advanced data and statistical analysis
In addition to Engineer 3 requirements, the candidate will also be required to carry out the following:
- Advanced knowledge in building automation systems (BAS), energy management, HVAC control systems, and smart building technologies
- Familiarity with sustainability practices, energy efficiency, and green building standards (such as LEED or WELL Building Standard)
- Experienced in leading teams, managing projects, and making decisions that align with the LANL mission
- Expert-level Technical Knowledge: A deep understanding of engineering principles, with specialized knowledge in DDC systems, tools, and technologies
- Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for coordinating with teams, presenting findings, and discussing technical issues with non-technical stakeholders
- Project Management: Experience with project scheduling, resource allocation, and ensuring compliance with engineering standards and regulations
- Ability to assess and manage engineering risks, ensuring safe and reliable outcomes
- Software Proficiency: Expertise with relevant industry software tools, such as WebCTRL, Alerton/Compass, TRANE, CAD programs, project management tools, and simulation software
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Certification or demonstration of knowledge in at least one of the following building automation systems. Trane, Automated Logic, Alerton, Johnson Controls
- Experienced in the use of EXCEL to manage and analyze data and generate graphs and data visualizations for professional publishable reports; Knowledge and some practice in various types of programming languages (e.g. C, C++, Python, MatLab, etc.), both line and block (graphical)
- A working knowledge of typical metrics and formulas used for building energy calculations; High proficiency with personal computers; Proficient in reading wiring diagrams
- Demonstrated ability to communicate well, both written and verbally; Adaptable to a variety of roles and projects
- Knowledge of typical metrics and formulas for engineering systems and calculations, application of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to conventional and non-conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems
- Certification or demonstrated proficiency in at least two or more of the following building automation systems. Trane, Automated Logic, Alerton, Johnson Controls
- Demonstrated working experience with related industry codes/standards
Education/Experience at Engineer 4 level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 12 years practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with industrial control systems, and metering devices, and remote monitoring.
- Knowledge of information technology architecture and communications networks for industrial control systems, including familiarity with BACnet, LonWorks, Modbus, ARCNET protocols
- Experience either with energy and HVAC audits or commissioning work
- CEM or LEED certification
- Experience with Test and Balance
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position at the higher level is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
