What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled professional to join our Engineering Services (ES) Division as a Constructability Review (CR) Engineer. Within ES, the Project Delivery Groups provide engineering facility support ensuring the modification and installation of systems, structures, and components meet operational standards. In this role you will support commercial non-nuclear facilities across the Laboratory's 38 square mile site, and may also work within nuclear and accelerator facilities. This position will be filled at either the Quality Assurance Engineer 3 or the Quality Assurance Engineer 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Quality Assurance Engineer 3 ($104,100 - $172,200)
As a CR Engineer 3 you will support the LANL CR Program with your expertise in engineering project delivery requirements, quality management, or both. You will work with the Integrated Project Team (IPT), other CR Team Members, project subcontractors, and LANL project personnel representing engineering and quality constructability requirements. You will be responsible for drafting and/or recording CR Plans, evaluating their effectiveness, and capturing Lessons Learned to incorporate back into the CR Program.

Quality Assurance Engineer 4 ($125,200 - $211,300)
In addition to the duties described above, as a CR Engineer 4, you'll be tasked with mentoring and leading other CR Program team members in the implementation and understanding of CR policies, plans, and procedures, and providing laboratory management with recommendations and advice. Your role will require the establishment and refinement of CR Program processes and procedures. This may include making recommendations to LANL engineering, quality, or other project processes and procedures in order to support the CR Program. You will also support the Team Lead in work planning, project staffing, and recruitment.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:


Quality Assurance Engineer 3:
  • Familiarity with construction techniques, materials, and equipment; building codes, standards, and regulations applicable to construction projects
  • Experience reviewing design documents (e.g., blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications) for feasibility and alignment with project requirements; working on multi-disciplinary engineering and construction teams
  • Ability to anticipate and mitigate construction-related issues before and during project execution
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for presenting constructability insights to designers, engineers, and project managers; computer skills, including the use of spreadsheets, presentations, and project documentation tools
  • Knowledge of workplace safety standards and practices, particularly in construction environments
Quality Assurance Engineer 4:

In addition to what is outlined at the lower level, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Experience analyzing material selection, site logistics, and equipment requirements to enhance project efficiency; working with contractors and suppliers to ensure constructability recommendations are actionable and practical; identifying and addressing constructability challenges during project design, planning, and execution phases
  • Familiarity with construction engineering principles, methods, and practices
  • Strong critical-thinking skills to evaluate innovative construction methods and technologies
  • Ability to assess and optimize designs for efficient construction, minimizing risks, costs, and timelines; facilitate cross-functional collaboration between design, construction, and operations teams
  • Skilled in coordinating constructability reviews and integrating feedback from various stakeholders
  • Proficiency in construction scheduling, cost estimating, and project delivery processes
Education/Experience Quality Assurance Engineer 3: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Quality Assurance, or Industrial Systems Engineering or a related field and 8 year of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience Quality Assurance Engineer 4:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree Engineering, Quality Assurance, or Industrial Systems Engineering and 12 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly relevant to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience in large-scale, complex projects such as industrial facilities, infrastructure, or energy projects is preferred
  • Strong understanding of construction engineering principles, methods, and practices
  • Proficiency in construction management and engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, Primavera, or BIM tools)
  • Lean construction or Six Sigma certification
  • Familiarity with sustainable construction practices and green building standards (e.g., LEED)
  • Experience with Design-Build or Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) methods
  • Registered Engineer in Training (EIT) or licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Demonstrated experience using and interpreting industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the construction discipline
  • Knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance:
Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test:
The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
