What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Operations Specialist 3 or Operations Specialist 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Weapons Facilities Operations (WFO) Division is searching for an Operations Specialist to support facility operations at the Dual Axis Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) Facility. You will provide support by creating and tracking documents and record managements, assist with reviews, assessments, fact-findings and issues and metrics tracking.

We are looking for someone that enjoys working with other people, has strong communication skills, is highly organized, self-driven and has a passion for using their skills to support national security. This position will be located at DARHT, an accelerator that provides a suite of diagnostic measurements including radiographic images of hydrodynamic tests used to support stockpile stewardship.

The WFO FOD is the principle agent for operations and is responsible for executing non- programmatic work in WFO facilities.

Operations Specialist 3 ($85,900 - $139,900)

The successful candidate will:

  • Work with document control to get all of our records into a common system
  • Work with Operations Managers to create and update procedures
  • Work with Issues Management Coordinator to help with issue tracking and closure
  • Work with project tracking to ensure we are maintaining an up-to-date tracking method and status
  • Assist with the coordination and documentation of assessments
  • Support facility acceptance checklists for facility changes and subcontractor work
  • Other tasks as needed - we are a diverse organization with many opportunities for growth


Operations Specialist 4 ($104,100 - $172,200)

In addition to what was outline at the lower level, at this level you will:

  • Become the point of contact (POC) for facility duty officers
  • Assist with new activity reviews
  • Work with Associate Laboratory Director, facilities and operations support staff for update of metrics and other information
  • Become the POC for Fire Protection Fire Hazard Analyses as well as the actions that need to be closed/addressed
  • Assist in the creation of annual work packages and funding requests
  • Assist in the facilitation of fact findings
  • Participates in the development of the requirements and criteria for projects


What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:

Document Control

Experience creating, tracking and editing policies and procedures or other similar documents.

Organization Skills

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly with respect to prioritization, planning, and follow-through.

Business Systems

Expert-level knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office, including the demonstrated ability to independently interpret data and information to produce advanced Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations.

Communication & Team Dynamics

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse team, including the ability to leverage ingenuity, creativity, and personal independence to support multiple concurrent team tasks with changing programmatic priorities.

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Facility Operations Knowledge

Advanced knowledge of facility operations, policies and procedures. Advanced understanding of work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration, and LANL policies and procedures. Advanced knowledge of the attributes of a sound conduct of operations program. Advanced knowledge of document controls and records management.

Education/Experience for Operations Specialist 3: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.

Education/Experience for Operations Specialist 4: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be expected.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of accelerator facilities, especially DARHT.
  • Ability to conceptualize and communicate major elements of facility operations and operational quality assurance to both technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Knowledge of the Laboratory's issues management process and performance measurement processes.
  • Knowledge of requirements drivers such as DOE orders, and federal regulations.
  • Working and demonstrated knowledge of Laboratory business and operations systems and standard software applications.
  • Experience in Conduct of Operations.
  • Knowledge of lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures


Position commitment:
Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
