What You Will Do


Utilize your chemical knowledge and management skills to do something that matters! Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)-one of the most innovative and creative multidisciplinary research institutions in the world-is looking for an experienced Environmental Professional (EP) to provide environmental surveillance and monitoring, consultations, analyses, process improvements and audits, for environmental compliance with management and staff throughout the institution to solve environmental-related problems for our Chemical Lifecycle Management program. Environmental Professional 2 ($85,900 - $139,900)
Reporting to the Group Leader of Chemical Lifecycle Management (WM-CLM) within the Waste Management Division (WM-DO), the EP will prepare and develop technical and regulatory documents and deliverables while fostering a respectful and inclusive work environment that promotes safety and security.

Environmental Professional 3 ($104,100 - $172,200)
Reporting to the Group Leader of Chemical Lifecycle Management (WM-CLM) within the Waste Management Division (WM-DO), you will oversee and develop processes necessary for ensuring compliance with technical and regulatory requirements. As an EP3 you will serve as a subject matter expert between the Laboratory and regulatory agencies on environmental, safety, and health laws and regulations effecting chemical lifecycle management (e.g. EPA - Environmental Protection Agency Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA); OSHA - Occupational Safety and Health Administration Hazard Communication Standard (HCS), Process Safety Management (PSM); DOT - Department of Transportation Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR).

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Technical experience in chemical management, including experience in chemical policy/procedure development, field work, performance assurance, and implementation of chemical management regulations and requirements.
  • Experience assisting others in the adherence to LANL chemical program procedures, policies, and conduct of operations.
  • Experience of effectively preparing and reviewing facility safety plans, integrated work documents, and other technical documents in collaboration with the Chemical Lifecycle Manager.
  • Proficiency in evaluating metrics, events, and performance feedback to improve programs, manage risks, and address vulnerabilities.
  • Experience in collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with chemical management/chemical safety regulations, waste management protocols, and hazard communication best practices.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly in assessing chemical management gaps, identifying process inefficiencies, and implementing effective solutions.
  • Effective communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work with laboratory Points Of Contact (POCs), safety teams, and compliance officers to ensure streamlined chemical management operations.

Additional Job Requirements for Environmental Professional 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Interprets and implements relevant federal, state and local environmental, occupational health regulations and including regulatory agreements while advising and consulting with all levels of staff throughout the institution in identifying, resolving, and developing solutions to environmental-related problems.
  • Oversees and develops processes necessary for ensuring compliance with technical and regulatory requirements and ensures results, materials, processes, and deliverables meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post-graduate coursework may be desirable.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Broad knowledge of Laboratory organizations, operations, and activities
  • Knowledge and working experience of EPA, OSHA, DOT, and international chemical regulations (e.g., RCRA, TSCA, GHS).
  • Experience with implementing federal and state codes, standards, and regulations in environmental, safety, and health related areas.
  • Knowledge of chemical information used for hazardous waste disposal determinations and documentation.
  • Knowledge of LANL chemical management and LANL management systems and requirements.
  • Familiarity with LANL's quality assurance (QA) process for chemical and/or waste handling and disposal.
  • Familiar with the process of responding to support tickets reporting bugs or unexpected operation of the chemical inventory software
  • Experience providing or supporting communications regarding lab safety and chemical inventory topics using multiple media types, including: print and live training (video conference and in-person)

In addition to the desired qualifications outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Advanced degree in chemistry, industrial hygiene, or other relevant field.
  • Experience in achieving compliance with formal and informal requirements using education, persuasion and training.
  • Ability to provide subject matter guidance regarding Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) classifications and Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) hazard classes to various non-technical collaborators (such as software developers)
  • Practical experience in accessing and reviewing site-level processes and the workers who own them. This includes administrative, support and technical functions and familiarity with work flow and its documentation.
  • Experience in achieving quality and performance objectives using a customer service model, emphasizing the importance of understanding the root cause of issues before taking action.
  • Advanced experience working with users of chemical inventory systems to diagnose problems and create workable solutions. Includes the process from ordering and receiving through labelling and entry of inventory data and on to final disposal.
  • Familiarity with the process of communicating feedback to software development and integration teams and supporting determination of the best path forward.
  • Prior experience with implementing a new inventory (or related) software or scanner technology

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
