Fire Protection Engineer 2/3

What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a talented and driven engineer to join our Engineering Services (ES) Division as a Fire Protection Engineer. The Engineering Services - Fire Protection Engineering (ES-FPE) Group is the Laboratory's central fire protection engineering and program support entity, responsible for providing institutional technical direction and support for the Lab's nuclear and nonnuclear facilities and programs. As a Fire Protection Engineer you will have to opportunity to support the Laboratory's mission by performing comprehensive fire protection support for LANL facilities, including performing fire hazard analysis, facility operations support, and design reviews for a LANL facilities including sprinkler design, fire alarm design, and passive fire protection design as a subject matter expert or approver. Fire Protection Engineers will work on dynamic teams to complete collaborative design analysis and design review solutions through mentoring, analyses, calculations, and leadership to meet the needs of a diverse customer base. This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facility Engineer Level 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Nuclear Facility Engineer Level 2 ($104,100-$172,200)
You will works with nuclear and non-nuclear facility systems and accepted methods for mitigation of risk from fire. At this level you will be expected to prevent and/or reduce fire consequences, reduce loss of life and property impacts of fire by applied engineering fundamentals, research, fire hazard analyses, detection and suppression of fires. You must have an advanced knowledge of public and industrial fire department organizations, and must be familiar with industry technical codes, standards, and practices to ensure DOE liabilities are protected from inherent risks of fire.

Nuclear Facility Engineer Level 3 ($122,300-$206,300)
At this level you will plan and coordinate one or more programs relating to the Laboratory Fire Protection Engineering Program, impairment control program, facility and programmatic surveillance program activities in compliance with current codes and standards, DOE orders and best industry practices. Your specific duties may include establishing and monitoring fire protection and loss prevention programs including fire protection engineering, while assisting other fire protection staff in surveillance and fire alarm system operations. You will works with all levels of LANL management and interacts with external agencies and/or community organizations, and review and recommend actions on fire protection program related issues.

  • Demonstrated experience with any of the following: Major commercial, industrial, or nuclear facility fire protection systems (i.e. fire alarm, fire suppression, specialty fire suppression systems, passive fire systems (fire barriers) inertion systems, and / or public address systems, engineering design process and/or maintenance of fire protection systems, fire modeling software and its application, codes and standards to include but not limited to the IBC, IEBC, NFPA, IFC, and / or UFC
Additional Job Requirements for Nuclear Facility Engineer 3:
  • In addition to the above, the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 will take a more active role within nuclear facilities with programmatic, operations, maintenance, document control, project management to ensure that nuclear facility requirements are met to accomplish the LANL Mission
Education/Experience at Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2: Nuclear Facilities Engineer Level 2 Position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree or a degree in Fire Protection Engineering is highly desirable.

Education/Experience at Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3: Nuclear Facilities Engineer Level 3 Position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited college or university and a minimum of 8 years practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree or a degree in Fire Protection Engineering is highly desirable.

This position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry level requirements to ensure employees in the position can successfully perform the requirements for the job. The Nuclear Facility Engineer 3 position would be expected to be able to obtain the nuclear experience on the job if they do not have it upon hire before becoming fully qualified.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Thorough knowledge of the Laboratory's fire protection policies, practices and procedures
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting research, investigating alternatives, and recommending solutions to problems affecting fire protection program administration
  • Understanding and knowledge of applicable federal worker health and safety laws, regulations, executive orders and DOE orders related to fire protection, loss prevention, and life safety
  • Knowledge of NFPA, IBC and DOE Codes
Work Schedule: General work schedule is 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, but a 9/80 schedule is available if desired.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
