The Materials Science Division (MST-DO) invites you to join our leadership team as an R&D Manager 4 (Group Leader) for the Materials Science in Radiation and Dynamics Extremes Group (MST-8).
Comprised of leading technical experts, technicians, research technologists, support staff, postdocs, and students, and with an annual operating budget of more than $40 million dollars, MST-8 is focused on the understanding and prediction of structure-property relationships of materials under radiation and dynamic extremes. Additionally, the group hosts three medium scale facilities: The Fuels Research Lab (FRL), Neutron Scattering and Ion Beam Materials Laboratories and is developing a radiological shell and authorization basis for a pilot scale Low Enriched Fuel Fabrication Facility (LEFF).
R&D Manager 4 ($163,000 - $282,200)
The MST-8 Group Leader (GL) will provide expert scientific and technical leadership for the group, division and Laboratory. The GL will be an effective steward of the materials capabilities in the areas of focus for the group, ensuring programmatic needs are fulfilled, providing fiscal stewardship, maintaining operational excellence, and developing a strategy for program development, growth and engagement in alignment with MST-DO and national program offices. Additional goals and responsibilities are:
- Support the growth and development of all staff across the group. Maintaining a high performing and positive group environment.
- Fostering collaborative relationships with peers within and outside of MST to support the mission and strategy of the division and directorate.
- Develop and maintain operational and safety needs across several diverse facilities.
- Develop and maintain a suite of materials development programs for harsh environments centered around our national program roles, unique materials modeling expertise and the Ion Beam Materials Lab (IBML) leveraging Office of Science, Industrial Partners, NNSA, Applied Energy, Nuclear Energy and LDRD programs.
- Manage the Electron Microscopy Laboratory (EML) to support Materials Science across the Laboratory and implement the long-term strategy for enhancing LANL capabilities and leadership in electron microscopy.
- Foster excellence in neutron and x-ray scattering science through use of LANL user facilities at LANSCE as well as advanced light sources at other user facilities.
- Develop, establish and maintain recognition of a unique materials modeling team that bridges experiment and modeling and complements the capabilities elsewhere at the lab.
- Develop an increased portfolio focused on development, synthesis, and characterization of novel materials. Particularly with focus on R&D fuels fabrication and property measurements at the FRL and pilot scale fuel fabrication at the LEFFF.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated success in leadership of a substantial scientific/technical organization.
- Demonstrated technical expertise in structure-property relationships of materials and outstanding scientific reputation in materials science and engineering, or a related discipline, as demonstrated by refereed technical publications, invited papers at major conferences, and project support.
- Demonstrated success in developing programs and in representing their organization internally and externally to sponsors/collaborators, review boards, etc.
- Proven track record of recruiting, attracting, evaluating, coaching/mentoring, and retaining creative, talented people to continuously improve an already effective organization.
- Experience effectively managing personal conflict, negotiating agreements, delegating authority, working collaboratively, and building consensus among staff.
- Demonstrated ability to work with complex facilities and operations. Proven track record of successful integration with facility support, safety support staff, and radiological support organizations.
- The ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance (which normally requires US citizenship).
Education and Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A Ph.D. (or an equivalent combination of education and experience) in materials science, physics, materials chemistry, or a related discipline in areas that are relevant to the mission of the Division is preferred.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with LANL program management including National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Department of Energy (DOE) {e.g., Office of Science (DOE-SC) and Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE)}, Department of Defense (DoD), other customer agencies, and educational institutions.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain and grow scope for a variety of customers.
- Experience with working with weapons funding programs and organizations (NNSA, NA-10, etc.)
- Knowledge of, or experience with qualification strategies as they relate to insertion of new materials in high consequence environments.
- Formal management training or demonstrated record of professional enrichment.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
