Production Agency Quality ensures that all products in the Weapons Production Directorate meet or exceed all quality requirements. You will perform work as a Quality Inspection Engineer performing moderate to highly complex inspections on various machined components and assemblies. The successful candidate will design and perform inspection operations using optical/multisensory coordinate measuring machines, rotary gages, hard gages, calipers, micrometers, and other open setup equipment. You will program CMMs and other automated inspection equipment as well as perform inspections using hard gauges and other open setup equipment.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Calibration and Maintenance of Equipment
  • Performs product/system/equipment design, development and/or production processes in area of discipline.
  • Supports technical research and gathers data needed by engineers in area of discipline. Assist engineers in preparing economic and operating feasibility studies and in performing similar activities aimed at evaluating alternative systems, equipment, materials or engineering methods.
  • Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Determines approach to solutions, plans, schedules and arranges own activities in accomplishing objectives
  • Performs computer-related activities, such as preparing input data and using computer programs for computerized solution of technical problems, including the use of CAD systems for drawing preparation. Assists engineers in reviewing and recommending action on client requests for engineering change orders, and obtains the required approvals.
  • Supports technical research and gathers data needed by engineers in area of discipline. Assist engineers in preparing economic and operating feasibility studies and in performing similar activities aimed at evaluating alternative systems, equipment, materials or engineering methods.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Inspection Design: Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in using and interpreting engineering blueprints, sketches, specifications, and related data to assist in inspection development.
  • Quality Standards: Broad knowledge of industry and regulatory standards.
  • Software: Working knowledge of and experience working with various software packages such as Calypso and/or PC-DMIS, Pro/E, SOLIDWORKS, or AutoCAD solid model CAD, and Excel.

Desired Qualifications:

  • CMM Capabilities: Extensive experience with optical/multi-sensor CMMs. Expert knowledge and experience with CMM programming and operation for parts with complex features and tight tolerances. Preference for experience using Calypso.
  • Inspection Design: Experience with Gage R&R design, analysis and interpretation.
  • Equipment: Advanced inspection experience using hard gages and other open set-up equipment.
  • Quality Standards: Knowledge of and experience in the areas of quality assurance regulatory, contractual, and technical documents, i.e., DOE Order 414.1D, 10 CRF 830, and Weapons Quality Policy (NAP-401.1a.

Education Requirements:

Quality Engineer 3: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, QE or Industrial Systems Engineering or a related field and 8 year of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
