We are seeking a creative, hard-working postdoc to join our team in The Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics (T-5) group within Los Alamos National Laboratory's Theoretical Division (T-Division). The successful applicant will assist in the development of multilevel and multifidelity machine learning architectures and training algorithms. Experience in related fields of research is desired, and the successful applicant will contribute to algorithm and theory development, implementation, and the application of new methods to complex multiphysics problems. The position is for two years.
T-Division employs about 300 scientists, including many postdoctoral associates and graduate students, and provides a unique and engaging environment that fosters multi-disciplinary collaborations to support the laboratory's strategic basic research and national security missions. The Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics (T-5) group within T-Division conducts research across a wide variety of topics including fusion science, space plasmas, numerical analysis, computational imaging, optimization, and the modeling of critical infrastructure (gas pipelines and electrical grids). These application areas are tied together by research in novel algorithms, numerical methods, and machine learning. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and interdisciplinary team that is working on problems of strategic national importance involving simulating high-dimensional, complex, multiscale phenomena. Many LANL projects address the nation's most challenging safety and security problems, and include extensive research related to high-performance computing. Access will be provided to state-of-the-art computing facilities at LANL.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Experience designing, implementing, and training machine learning models.
- Demonstrated experience in conducting original scientific research through peer reviewed publication record.
- Creative problem-solving skills and the ability and willingness to engage in new fields of research.
Education/Experience: PhD in Applied Math, Statistics, or Computational Sciences within the past five years (or soon to be completed).
Desired Qualifications:
- Expertise in one or multiple of:
- o Stochastic optimization
- o Analysis of machine learning methodologies
- o Multilevel methods
- Expertise in computational tools (python, git, command line, jax/pytorch/tensorflow, etc.)
Salary: Competitive salaries are based on the date the PhD degree requirements were completed or the degree was awarded. Starting salary for a new graduate is currently $94,500.
