This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Weapon Stockpile Modernization Division (Q Division) provides systems engineering and program management to develop and field qualified engineering solutions to improve the safety, reliability, and security of our Nation's nuclear stockpile throughout the weapon life cycle. Q Division is responsible for leadership of activities in new LANL weapons programs as well as life extension and alteration projects.
The Advanced System Development Group (Q-18) is responsible for Systems and Design Engineering of Future Weapons Systems up to phase 3/6.3 with emphasis on improved performance, safety, producibility, and agility of the future stockpile, Interagency Peer Reviews (IPRs) of LLNL Systems, and Future System and System Agnostic Design and System Engineering support to a wide range of experiments from internally fielded technology tests to hydrodynamic and subcritical experiments to system flight tests.
This R&D Engineer 2/3 position will support python development and maintenance as a member of the small and fast paced Q-18 weapon system effectiveness team, and will be involved in the following responsibilities:
Technical Knowledge
The syntax, structure, and features of Python. Programming and development standards and procedures as well as object-oriented programing architectures and design pattern knowledge. Experience applying existing theories, principles, and concepts of computer science practices to lead development by investigating, designing, refactoring, optimizing, documenting, testing, evaluating, parallelizing, and implementing code to be maintainable and efficient.
Project Facilitation & Integration
Proven ability to satisfy customer requirements as demonstrated by the ability to resolve a wide range of issues while directly contributing to the completion of milestones on multiple concurrent projects. Ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple assigned projects. Ability to develop and foster successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems.
Collaboration
Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision, as well as the ability to be an effective member of a multidisciplinary team. Experience providing technical direction, mentoring, coordinating/monitoring the work of others, and serving as a role model for effective and creative technical leadership.
Communication
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are essential in this position for building and maintaining effective business relationships within the organization, in partnership with internal or external support organizations, and with customers.

Minimum Job Requirements:
R&D Engineer 2 ($104,100 - $172,200):
- Effectively lead python development by investigating, designing, refactoring, optimizing, documenting, testing, evaluating, parallelizing, and implementing code to be maintainable and efficient.
- Apply algorithms to a wide range of problems including but not limited to optimization, clustering, and other machine learning techniques.
- Build interfaces to legacy codes in other languages (FORTRAN) and parallelize computation across HPC platforms.
R&D Engineer 2 Education and Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
R&D Engineer 3 ($125,200 - $211,300):
In addition to the outlined responsibilities at the R&D Engineer 2 level, the R&D Engineer 3 candidate will be expected to lead smaller projects and teams; mentor other junior developers; be expected to find solutions to complex technical issues; and be regarded as an advanced developer. We will also expect the candidate to evaluate and recommend new tools and technology stacks to ensure that the organization is utilizing the best tools and methodologies in the market.
Additional minimum requirements for this level are:
- Architect an Artificial Intelligence (AI) pipeline that employs each step of a custom codebase into a single configurable process.
- Experience developing Artificial Intelligence agents.
R&D Engineer 3 Education and Experience: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience wrapping FORTRAN codes with a python interface
- Experience with AI/ML techniques
- Experience developing Artificial Intelligence systems for wargaming applications.
- Work well in a team-oriented environment with the ability to communicate and collaborate cross-functionally within and outside of the group.
- Effective interpersonal skills for communicating technical information, building relationships, and resolving conflicts.
- Strong multitasking capabilities with the ability to work on multiple products and issues simultaneously under tight deadlines.
- Understanding and research of new technologies and tools and incorporating their usage into new products and services.
- Experience interacting with and presenting to senior-level management and customers.
- Active Q/SCI Clearance
Work Environment:
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances.
