The Pit Technologies (PT) Division, part of the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production (ALDWP), is instrumental in delivering top-quality plutonium pit-related products and services. This division focuses on maintaining and enhancing the performance of nuclear components while following rigorous compliance and safety protocols. As a member of the PT-2 Machining Group within the PT Division, you will engage in complex machining and processing tasks, apply your engineering expertise, and mentor early-career employees in their professional development.
As a Manufacturing Technician Research Tec 4, at our nuclear facility, you will report to a FLM (First Line Manager) or MM1 (Manufacturing Manager 1). Your responsibilities include:
Provide advanced technical support for both experimental and manufacturing activities, including the design, assembly, modification, repair, and maintenance of specialized equipment. Building on the responsibilities of lower levels, this role requires greater autonomy and limited supervision while working in high-consequence safety areas, such as handling chemicals, biological materials, radioactive substances, high-energy devices, high-power lasers, and other hazardous materials. This position plays a vital role in advancing research and supporting national security objectives by safeguarding sensitive and classified information.
You will be responsible for maintaining and repairing mechanical and electrical machine tools, performing preventative maintenance, and assisting with equipment installation, teardown, and relocation. Additionally, you will develop comprehensive preventative maintenance plans, lead maintenance projects, and provide reliable maintenance estimates to customers. This role requires advanced expertise in areas such as vacuum systems, pressure systems, welding, mechanical assembly, leak testing, equipment troubleshooting, and chemical inventory management. You will also serve as a leader, guiding teams through complex tasks and collaborating effectively with vendors.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated proficiency with hand tools, adherence to IWD safety practices, and strong skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
- Expertise in mechanical and electrical machine tool maintenance, including preventative maintenance and equipment installation, teardown, and relocation.
- Advanced knowledge in areas such as vacuum systems, pressure systems, welding, mechanical assembly, leak testing, equipment troubleshooting, and chemical inventory management.
- Proven ability to lead teams, communicate effectively with vendors, and work independently while managing complex tasks.
- Forklift or crane operator certifications are preferred; additional certifications will be considered.
Education/Experience: Requires an Associate's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
DOE Order 426.2: Requires a High School Diploma.
Desired Qualifications:
- Previous work experience in a nuclear facility or with nuclear material.
- Technical knowledge of facilities, manufacturing, tooling, and production processes.
- Familiarity with laboratory procedures, standards, and guidelines.
- Experience handling classified material and parts.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
