The Advanced Nuclear Technology Group (NEN-2) conducts research, development, training, and operations in nuclear measurement techniques and radiography. Key focuses include emergency response, weapons of mass destruction countermeasures, stockpile stewardship, intelligence support, and treaty verification. NEN-2 also conducts nuclear criticality experiments at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) to support nuclear safety, energy, arms control, nonproliferation, and nuclear material accounting. NCERC maintains special nuclear material (SNM) for various nuclear security missions, including safety research, emergency response, and training. NEN-2 collaborates with NCERC and Mission Support and Test Services (MSTS) to perform critical experiments. Additionally, NEN-2 trains personnel in nuclear materials handling, criticality safety, and instrumentation to support national security. The selected candidates will work in a dynamic team environment.

As a Research Technician 4 in NEN-2 you will:

  • Operate and support a variety of radiation detection equipment, both gamma-ray and neutron based
  • Operate and support a variety of low-to-high energy radiography instruments
  • Qualify as a Fissile Material Handler (FMH) to perform hand-on experimental operations with significant quantities of SNM
  • Support NEN-2 scientists/engineers and trainees in performing experiments or conducting training at LANL and/or NCERC
  • Learn the principles and practice of radiation measurements, radiography, critical experiments or nuclear criticality safety and develop subject-matter expertise in at least one core measurement technique or technology
  • Sustain and improve the work authorization and work execution for NEN-2 operations

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Familiarity with some radiation detection instrumentation or radiography instruments, for example: installation, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, or analysis of experimental data
  • Demonstrated experience with hands-on work, for example: use of hand tools, machining, device fabrication or assembly, electronics, computer networking, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience organizing technical work, for example: supplies, purchases, shipping, equipment, labs, schedules
  • Familiarity with working successfully in a high consequence environment that demands excellent attention to detail, conduct of operations, and safe work practices
  • The ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance
  • The ability to obtain and maintain Human Reliability Program (HRP)
  • certification


Education/Experience:
Position requires an Associate's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with one major radiation detection or radiography techniques
  • Fissile material handling experience
  • Ability and inclination to contribute to a wide range of basic-research and mission-science programs as needs and opportunities evolve with time
  • An active DOE Q Clearance
  • An active Human Reliability Program (HRP) certification

Work Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, New Mexico with routine (50% or greater) travel to the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS).

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Term position: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.
