What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory‐Carlsbad Operations, is located in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and is the location of the Repository Science and Operations (RSO) Program. The RSO program provides technical expertise on transuranic (TRU) waste treatment, packaging, characterization,acceptable knowledge, transportation, and inventory to the DOE Carlsbad Field Office (CBFO). This internship will be located in the Carlsbad, New Mexico office. RSO is seeking undergraduates in the science field. It is a paid internship, requiring a minimum of 20 hours per week year-round. All selected candidates will be provided with a mentor and will receive Laboratory administrative support training, including learning the Laboratory's organizational structure, communications protocol, and applicable policies and procedures. Student interns will be assigned to different groups throughout the RSO program with rotating assignments lasting 3-4 months.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ability to work a minimum of 20 hours per week (full-time internships are available and highly desirable)

  • Willingness and ability to rotate assignments

  • Ability to pass a new employment drug test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

  • Work ethic including reliability as an independent worker and as a team member.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to manage time and see tasks to completion.

  • Ability to follow instructions to produce quality work by applying attention to detail.

Desired Skills:

  • Self-motivated with clear idea of near and longer-term career goals in a science-related field.

  • At least one year of organic/inorganic chemistry

  • Proficient skills in computer applications for recording of information or data.

  • Experience with databases/other information management systems

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Ability to discriminate speech, sitting, standing, walking, typing or keyboarding

Education: Currently undergoing a science-related Bachelor's degree, with a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0.

The RSO program located in Carlsbad, NM is part of the Associate Directorate of Environment Safety & Health, Quality, Safeguards and Security (ALDESHQSS) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).
