Los Alamos National Laboratory Explosives Research Technologist 1 (Research Technologist 1) in Las Vegas, Nevada

The Explosives Research Technologist 1 will report to the Nevada Operations Group Leader within the Integrated Weapons Experiments Division. The Group is the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) on-site organization responsible for preparation, fielding, and execution of dynamic high explosive related experiments including sub-critical dynamic experiments involving special nuclear material for the LANL Weapons program as well as other national security customers.

This position requires a skilled professional that will provide support for fielding and firing explosive experiments. Tasks may include: assembly of high explosive test articles or packages, set-up and use of various types of diagnostic and recording equipment including PDV, oscilloscopes, high-speed cameras, pin/switch circuits, and temperature control circuits. Design, Assemble, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot electronics, e.g., fire set and control systems; and design, fabricate, and align various shot and diagnostic stands. In addition, the Research Technologists will perform precision optical and/or mechanical alignment of assemblies and record precision mechanical and electrical measurements while preparing and executing experiments.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Expertise

Knowledge of basic science and engineering principles regarding experiments and high explosives.

Tools and Systems

Experience usingdiagnostic instruments, including lasers, oscilloscopes, digitizers, delay generators, pressure sensors, and microcontrollers. Proficiency with basic Microsoft computer programs.

Communication

Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with all levels of personnel and customers, as well as experience providing technical direction, mentoring and coordinating/monitoring the work of others.

Education Requirement for Research Technologist 1

Requires a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in a related field and a minimum of two years related experience, or anequivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

Additional Sytems and Tools

Software experience using AutoCad, Solidworks, Pspice, MatLab, Labview, Mathematica, etc.

High Explosives Knowledge

Familiarity with safe handling methods for experimentation with high explosives and/or working with high-voltage systems. Knowledge of DOE Standard 1212 (formerly the DOE Explosives Safety Manual).

Government

Experience working with government funding agencies and/or Federal program managers.
