Los Alamos National Laboratory Explosives Technologist (Research Technologist 1) in Las Vegas, Nevada
What You Will Do
The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division, J Division Nevada Operations (J-NV) Group is looking for an Explosives Technologist 1. This position is fulltime, located at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS), and requires living in the Las Vegas, Nevada area.
J-NV is the NNSS on-site organization responsible for preparing, fielding, and executing dynamic high explosive-related experiments, including sub-critical dynamic experiments involving special nuclear material for the Los Alamos National Laboratory’s (LANL’s) Weapons Program and other national security customers.
The ideal candidate will report to the J-NV Group Leader and possess basic science and engineering principles, be a self-starter, and have a personality suited to a team environment where explosives are handled safely and respectfully. This position requires the candidate to support fielding and firing explosive experiments. Tasks may include assembly of high explosive test articles or packages and set-up and use of diagnostic and recording equipment such as Photonic Doppler Velocimetery, oscilloscopes, high-speed cameras, pin/switch circuits, and temperature control circuits. Additional tasks include design, assembly, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting electronics (fire set and control systems), and fabrication and alignment of experimental and diagnostic stands. The candidate will also perform precision optical and/or mechanical alignment of assemblies and record precision mechanical and electrical measurements while preparing and executing experiments.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Knowledge of basic science and engineering principles regarding high explosive experiments. Self-starter; ability to prioritize work during complex experimental setups with several in dynamic environments, outdoors or indoors, alone or as part of a team.
Tools and Systems
Experience employing diagnostics such as velocimetry, electrical pulsed power, or flash X-rays. Experience with diagnostic components such as digitizers, delay generators, pressure sensors, and microcontrollers. Proficiency with basic computer programs such as MS Word and MS Excel. Proficiency with hand tools and power tools to use in building experiment test stands and associated hardware setups.
Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with all levels of personnel and customers, as well as experience providing technical direction, mentoring, and coordinating/monitoring the work of others. Unafraid to ask questions and learn from more experienced team members.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 2 years of related experience; or associates and 6 years related experience; or a combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation .
Software experience using AutoCAD, Solidworks, Pspice, MatLab, LabVIEW, Mathematica. Tooling experience including lathes, mills, additive manufacturing, and/or CNC.
High Explosives Knowledge
Familiarity with safe handling methods for experimentation with high explosives and/or working with high-voltage systems. Knowledge of DOE Standard 1212 (formerly the DOE Explosives Safety Manual).
Ability to look at an experimental test bed and identify shortfalls or improvements. Ability to think through a unique problem associated with setting up an experiment, then designing and implementing a solution.

Work Environment: Outdoors in confined space, at heights, working alone, working overtime or irregular schedule, working off-shift/rotating schedule, domestic/foreign travel, and operation of motor vehicles. Work in a noisy environment, work near electrical power supplies, work with weapons or explosives, work with vibrating equipment/machinery, and work near machinery with moving parts. Work in an environment with toxic chemicals, irritant chemicals, dusts or powders, sprays, mists, or vapors, and fumes. Head protection, safety glasses or eye protection, face shield or facial protection, mask, hearing protection, gloves or hand protection, and safety shoes or protective footgear.

This position is located at the NNSS and is located about 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, NV. Employees can take a commuter bus, carpool, or drive to work locations. Once at the work location, experiment firing sites can be an additional 30 to 50 miles. Transportation to these sites is available. Employees must factor in an extra 1 to 1 ½ hours commute each way to the 10‐hour workday (employees work a 4‐day/10‐ hour day schedule).
Work at the NNSS usually results in long days that start at sun up and end late in the day. Work locations can be 1000 ft. underground or in the middle of the desert. Temperatures can vary from below freezing to above 100 degrees.
This position requires periodic travel from Las Vegas, NV to Los Alamos, NM for training and project-specific requirements.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
