Los Alamos National Laboratory Nuclear Engineering and Support Technologist (Research Technologist 1) in Las Vegas, Nevada

What You Will Do

This position will (1) support LANL project, engineering, and maintenance activities at NCERC in Nevada , (2) perform Fissionable Material Handling duties, and (3) provide miscellaneous support services in a Hazard Category 2 Nuclear Facility.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Execute hands-on manipulation of special nuclear material, maintenance of critical assembly machines, and equipment setup in support of future operations.

  • Perform various project support tasks to include decontamination activities, escorting customers and visitors, etc.

  • Perform maintenance on critical assemblies in a radioactive material controlled area.

  • Support vital safety system cognizant system engineers in performance of all engineering duties.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ability to work as an independent agent and as a team member in a high-intensity, dynamic nuclear operations environment.

  • Knowledge in the areas of mechanical, electrical, and nuclear engineering.

  • Ability to schedule, execute, and meet directed milestones.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to perform hands-on activities related to equipment testing and maintenance.

Training/Certifications:

  • Active Q clearance.

  • Human Reliability Program certification.

Education/Experience :Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience with nuclear facility operations and support.

  • Knowledge and experience with radiation detection and measurement equipment.

  • Experience handling nuclear material.

Location: This position will be physically located in Mercury, Nevada.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year .

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
