What You Will Do

This internship position is within the Nuclear Engineering and Nonproliferation (NEN) Division at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. NEN Division is seeking a graduate student in the administrative and business operations field, such as business administration, accounting, human resources, project management, etc. It is a paid internship, requiring a minimum of 20 hours per week year-round. The selected candidate will be provided with a mentor and will receive Laboratory administrative support training, including learning the Laboratory's organizational structure, communications protocol, business systems (including but not limited to foreign and domestic travel, time keeping, US and foreign visitor processing, procurement), and applicable administrative policies and procedures. Student interns will be assigned to different groups throughout the Division with rotating assignments in each area lasting 3-4 months at a time. The goal is to prepare the intern to be able to compete for entry-level administrative support positions within NEN and/or elsewhere at the Laboratory. Opportunities for full-time employment are possible depending upon proven performance.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ability to work a minimum of 20 hours per week, year-round (full-time internships are available and highly desirable)

  • Demonstrated experience working in a team environment

  • Demonstrated attention to detail

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • At least two years of part- or full-time work experience in an office setting and/or in a customer-service environment

  • Willingness and ability to rotate assignments every 3-4 months, which requires flexibility and ability to adapt to changing office environments and procedures

  • Ability to take direction from multiple personnel

  • Ability to obtain administrative level access to LANL business systems (and eventually a Q clearance), which typically requires US citizenship

  • Education: Currently enrolled in an accredited academic institution pursuing a business-related Master's degree, with a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.

Desired Skills

  • Self-motivated with clear idea of near- and long-term career goals in a business-related field

  • Ability to work >20 hours per week, year-round.
