Los Alamos National Laboratory Advanced Nanomechanical Testing Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

Vacancy Name: IRC77417

Description

Job Title Advanced Nanomechanical Testing Postdoc

Location Los Alamos, NM, US

Organization Name MPA-CINT/Center For Integrated Nanotechnologies

Minimum Salary

Maximum Salary

What You Will Do

CINT and Sigma-2 are seeking outstanding postdoc candidates for advanced nanomechanical testing of defect structures (dislocations, twins, grain boundaries, phase boundaries) in various metal and ceramic materials. In addition, the candidates are expected to have TEM background to characterize microstructure evolution under mechanical deformation. Techniques will include nanoindentation, microscale scratching, conventional diffraction contrast and analytical (S)TEM, in situ straining TEM and SEM, HR-TEM, FIB, PFIB, and EBSD at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The successful candidate will work with a team of experimentalist and modelers to explore and understand various deformation mechanisms. Of particular importance is the role of interfaces. The position will be awarded to the candidate demonstrating exceptional talent with a successful collaborative and scientific track record.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Expertise in nanoindentation/microscatching

  • Expertise in conventional diffraction contrast and analytical (scanning) transmission electron microscopy (S)TEM and high resolution TEM.

  • Experience characterizing defects (dislocations, grain boundaries, phase boundaries) using (S)TEM and HR-TEM.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of metals and ceramic deformation behavior.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with in situ SEM or TEM mechanical testing

  • Experience with a monochromated, image-corrected FEI Titan and other SEMs, FIBs, and TEMs.

  • Experience in Electrochemistry and Corrosion

  • Experience with EBSD.

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which generally requires US citizenship.

Education: A PhD in materials science, physics, chemistry, or a related engineering discipline completed within the last 5 years or soon to be completed.

Notes to Applicants:

For technical questions related to this position, contact Drs. Nan Li ( nanli@lanl.gov ), Enkeleda Dervishi-Whetham ( enkeleda@lanl.gov ), and Daniel Hooks ( dhooks@lanl.gov ).

Additional Details:

Q Clearance: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Candidates may be considered for a Director's Postdoc Fellowship and outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious Richard P. Feynman, Darleane Christian Hoffman, J. Robert Oppenheimer, or Frederick Reines Distinguished Postdoc Fellowships.
