Los Alamos National Laboratory Advanced Radiography Scientist (Scientist 3/4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The M-3 Focused Experiments Group is seeking a Scientist 3/4 Advanced Radiography Scientist to provide technical leadership for low-energy flash x-ray radiographic diagnostics used in high-profile and impactful focused explosives experiments, including for the Science Campaigns, hydrodynamic and DSW (Directed Stockpile Work) programs as well as a variety of others. M-3 has established a reputation for excellence in advanced radiographic and imaging diagnostics. This position will be filled at either the Scientist 3 or Scientist 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Scientist 3 $113,100 - $190,900

The Scientist 3 will be responsible for the following:

  • Leading research areas and activities in support of developing advancements in low-energy radiographic capability for use at explosives firing sites

  • Seeking and securing scope and funding for team projects

  • Working with collaborators and the team to develop and grow programs and diagnostic development in the area of advanced radiographic techniques

  • Exercising technical oversight of technicians, technologists, and/or postdocs in both field and computational environments

Scientist 4 $135,800 - $235,600

In addition to R&D Scientist 3 responsibilities, the Scientist 4 is expected to translate national needs into technological objectives. The Scientist 4 is recognized as a technical expert in the use of radiography as a diagnostic tool.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience in leading the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of cross-disciplinary, or highly and/or narrowly specialized, novel scientific and technological solutions in support of R&D initiatives.

  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment, including leadership of small teams.

  • Demonstrated record of successful proposal writing, as evidenced by a history of internal or external research funding and demonstrated success in managing research programs and budgets.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques and approaches to address specialized problems related to Weapons and/or national security programs.

  • Develops and/or guides ideas for new proposals and business development opportunities. Leads development of technical section of small to moderate proposals.

  • Demonstrated record of communication of technical results, including publications, presentations, reports, technical products, etc.

  • Must be able to obtain a Q clearance (this generally means that the candidate must be a U. S. citizen).

Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 4:

  • Position requires a senior Scientist in either a broad discipline or specialized field with the ability to translate national needs into technological objectives and goals

  • A record of successful teamwork and consensus building demonstrated by working across organizational and program boundaries, both internal and external to LANL.

  • Experience in participation in professional societies, complex interactions, special assignments, and/or external collaborations, has participated in external working groups and/or assists in organizing meetings and colloquia.

  • Extensive experience identifying, promoting, and developing technical capabilities.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in developing and growing programs, including success at project development, advocacy, resource allocation for self and others, execution and successful customer relations

Education/Experience at lower level : Position requires a Master’s degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level : Position requires a Master’s degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 12 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A PH.D. In a STEM field from an accredited college or university.

  • Active DOE Q Clearance.

  • Knowledge of the DOE nuclear weapons program structure, Laboratory’s financial management systems, and an aptitude for forward thinking and strategic planning.

  • Experience in the area of pulsed power electrical work and/or x-ray detector technology.

  • Experience working with US government-funding agencies and federal program managers.

  • Able to raise funding to support oneself and able to build a portfolio to fund others.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
