Los Alamos National Laboratory Advanced Simulation and Computing, Verification and Validation Program Manager (Program Manager 4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

If the answer is “yes” we invite you to learn more about our Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) Verification and Validation (V&V) Program Manager opening in the Computational Physics Division (XCP).

As a Program Manager, you would be responsible for the leadership and scientific direction of the V&V Program Element, underwriting the veracity of the modern software base required to execute the Laboratory’s broad Stockpile Stewardship mission. The V&V Program Element involves an approximately $20M research and development portfolio, with projects responsible for hierarchical verification and validation assessments of simulation capabilities for weapons physics and engineering environments; analysis of nuclear and non‐nuclear validation data; uncertainty analysis methods and applications; verification testing; and small‐scale experimental validation.

In this role you will serve on both the ASC and XCP leadership teams and will work with the V&V Project Leaders to provide technical assessments of the credibility and utility of the weapons physics and engineering codes used at LANL. You also will enable the development of the analytical methods required to support such assessments.

Technical Skills

For this role you will need broad technical knowledge in one or more programmatic and/or technical areas relevant to the Verification and Validation Program Element. Additionally, demonstrated technical acumen in verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification methodologies and their application, as well as in the cutting-edge physics, numerical methods, computer science, and code development capabilities, which are underwritten by these methodologies, will be required.

Program Management

You will need to have experience with the management of technical programs, including success at program development, planning, negotiation, advocacy, resource allocation, management, execution, and customer interactions.


To succeed in this role you must have the ability to facilitate successful teamwork and consensus building across organizational and program boundaries. This includes excellent interpersonal and communication skills as evidenced by successful internal and external interactions and by briefings, presentations, and writings including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical personnel.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and 12 years of directly related technical and project management experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A Ph.D. in science or engineering in a specialization relevant to ASC V&V is strongly preferred.

We would like if you had the ability to develop a detailed vision and plan for the future of a large technical program and to integrate such a plan with complimentary strategies at the program and division level.

Stakeholder Experience

It would be a plus if you had experience working effectively with contributing and partnering line organizations, other programs, DOE HQ, and our LLNL and SNL partners.


Formal knowledge of national standards for verification and validation of computational modeling and simulation tools, such as those published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Code Base

Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience using, LANL’s multi-physics production code base.

Nuclear Weapons Physics

It would be helpful if you had experience with the activities, needs, and workflow of the nuclear weapons physics applications community and experience validating new code capabilities for production.
