Los Alamos National Laboratory Analytical Chemist (Scientist 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

The work we do at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) matters to our country and the world. The B11 Group is looking for a high motivated, productive, and multi-talented scientist to pursue research within a growing team of scientists working on mass spectrometry analysis of biomolecules. The laboratory focuses on host response, mechanism of action, and biomarker identification due to various chemical, biological, and radiological insults. Specifically the laboratory is seeking to advance the mass spectrometry multi-omics research space developing holistic workflows in proteomics, lipidomics, and metabolomics. You will be expected to publish scientific results in high-impact peer reviewed journals and present your work at conferences. The candidate will be expected to support current efforts and propose new efforts internally and externally.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated expertise in analytical chemistry

  • Broad fundamental knowledge of mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography

  • Expertise in analysis of biomolecules, including proteins, lipids, and metabolites

  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Experience with the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of various mass spectrometers including Thermo Fisher Orbitraps.

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 4 years of relevant experience , typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in mass spectrometry based metabolomics using Thermo Fisher Scientific instrumentation such as the Exploris 480, Orbitrap ID-X/IQ-A, Orbitrap Eclipse, and Q Exactive platforms is a plus.

  • Knowledge/experience in mass spectrometry based multi-omics, data acquisition methods, and interpretation of results.

  • Familiarity utilizing robotic platforms especially for sample preparation is desired.

  • Expdrienced in developing custom metabolomics libraries for definitive compound identification.

  • Experience with intelligent data acquisition technologies for metabolomics is a plus.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Bioscience Division (B) comprises a diverse group of experimentalists and computer scientists who work closely with other interdisciplinary scientists across the Laboratory. Their work serves the Nation by developing science and technology to reduce natural and deliberate threats to human populations, their way of life, and the global environment. The mission of the Bioenergy and Biome Sciences (B‐11) group includes enhancing biomass growth, oil production and photosynthetic efficiency in biofuel feedstocks. Members of the group work on microbiome characterization, elucidation of biochemical pathways, structural biology, enzyme function discovery and organic synthesis.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
