What You Will Do
The Deputy Group Leader of the Applied Computer Science Group (CCS-7) is a member of the Computer, Computational, and Statistical Sciences (CCS) Division’s leadership team, and supports the CCS-7 Group Leader in providing technical leadership and management to the group.
CCS Division is a vibrant scientific research and development organization that works in multiple mission areas of Los Alamos National Laboratory. The division is focused on impactful research and development in fundamental computer science, computational physics, algorithms, high‐performance computing, statistics, and applied mathematics.
Within CCS Division, CCS‐7 is the vanguard for scientific applications at extreme scale through the co‐design of applications, algorithms, and architectures. The group has a diverse programmatic and scientific portfolio focused on application and algorithm co‐design for advanced architectures, programming models to increase developer productivity, and support of open and defense-related application codes. The group has a significant responsibility to educate the computational science workforce at the Laboratory and in the DOE complex to prepare for next generations platforms beyond exascale systems. CCS-7 also provides next generation computer science and software engineering capabilities toward the advancement of LANL’s mission-critical and cutting-edge simulation codes to ensure their continued success in addressing important scientific questions for the nation. CCS-7 has approximately 50 employees and students and an approximate annual budget of $27M.
The Deputy Group Leader position is an entry‐level R&D management position. The Deputy Group Leader works closely with the Group Leader to provide scientific and programmatic leadership and to oversee the group’s technical quality and the operational and security envelope. The successful candidate will be an effective leader who has outstanding communication skills and a vision for assisting the Group Leader and the Laboratory in integrating capabilities across the institution to achieve mission goals. This position provides the opportunity to engage in many programs in both the open and secure scientific arenas. Group-level managers in CCS Division are expected to actively participate in technical projects and effectively balance leadership with technical contributions. The Deputy Group Leader position is funded at a 50-75% level and the candidate is expected to secure and dedicate the remaining effort towards technical projects.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Record of strong technical leadership culminating in technical products, software, or outcomes.
Demonstrated scientific accomplishment and expertise in one or more technical areas of the group.
Evidence of excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written, technical and non-technical), including the ability to work with staff and management across multiple organizations as well as resolve conflicts.
Commitment to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming work environment that embraces a variety of ideas and backgrounds.
Education/Experience: Ph.D. in computer science, computational science, or other scientific field (such as physics/applied mathematics/engineering/biology/chemistry with an emphasis in computational science), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of DOE, DoD, and other internal and external programs of relevance to the Associate Directorate for Theory, Simulation and Computation (ADTSC) and CCS Division.
Demonstrated ability to identify and respond effectively to new funding opportunities and program development, assembling effective project teams across multidisciplinary and organizational boundaries.
Established track record and national visibility in technical areas relevant to the group.
Leadership experience with administrative, personnel, budget, and/or programmatic business systems and procedures including, but not limited to FVTS, Concur, Oracle and MicroStrategy Financial Reports.
Active DOE Q Clearance or the ability to obtain one in a reasonable timeframe.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
