Los Alamos National Laboratory Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics Deputy Group Leader (R&D Manager 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

As Deputy Group Leader (DGL) of the Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics Group (T-5) you will work in partnership with the T-5 Group Leader in providing vision, technical leadership, and management for the group. You will also be a member of the Theoretical Division’s leadership team. The DGL reports to the Group Leader and assists and complements the Group Leader in ensuring effective program execution and sound fiscal management, stimulating program development activities, promoting personnel development, and performing administrative tasks. The position is funded at 50% with the expectation that for the other 50%, the successful candidate will conduct funded research and development activities that are in alignment with the capabilities and direction of the group.

T-5 is an interdisciplinary group with scientist coming from backgrounds in mathematics, statistics, computer science, physics, and engineering. Research in the group covers a broad set of areas including applied scientific computing, applied mathematics, numerical analysis, algorithm development, optimization and control, artificial intelligence, image processing, network science, plasma physics, fusion energy, and space weather.

The group consists of approximately 30 Ph.D. and staff scientists, approximately 20 postdoctoral researchers, and about 5-20 students that peak in the summer. The staff in the group are supported on a total budget of over $21M. The group is supported by funding from sources including DOE (NNSA, Office of Science, Office of Electricity, ARPA-E) and NSAS. The group contributes to national and global security, with its researchers combining mathematical modeling, large scale computer simulations, and data analytics to support Los Alamos National Laboratory’s nuclear security mission. Recent awards in the group include the 2020 R&D 100 award for Amanzi–ATS: Modeling Environmental Systems across Scales.

  • Ability to effectively communicate both technical and non-technical concepts with staff and management across multiple levels and organizations

Education/Experience: Five or more years of research experience after receiving a Ph.D. in engineering, physics, applied mathematics, physics, engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience building and managing teams and projects across organizational boundaries

  • Experience in proposing, developing, and sustaining research programs

  • Fellowships, honors, or participation in national committees in physics or mathematics

  • Familiarity with one or more DOE program

  • Previous experience as a line or program manager

  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance in a reasonable timeframe.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
