Los Alamos National Laboratory ASC Computer Scientist (Scientist 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2/Scientist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
As the successful candidate, you will join a team in CCS-7 tasked with researching and developing software architecture and infrastructure for current and future mission-oriented physics simulation projects. The focus of this position is two-fold: a.) contribution to the development of production codes and software infrastructure and b.) development, maintenance, and improvement of continuous integration (CI) and continuous deployment (CD) testing infrastructures. This work will be performed in the context of multi-physics codes across a variety of high-performance computing (HPC) architectures and exascale-class machines at LANL and elsewhere.
CCS Division is a vibrant scientific research and development organization that works across multiple mission areas at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The division is focused on impactful research and development in fundamental computer science, computational physics, algorithms, high-performance computing, statistics, and applied mathematics.
Within CCS Division, CCS-7 is the vanguard for scientific applications at extreme scale through the co-design of applications, algorithms, and architectures. The group has a diverse programmatic and scientific portfolio focused on application and algorithm co-design for advanced architectures, programming models to increase developer productivity, and support of open and defense-related application codes. The group has a significant responsibility to educate the computational science workforce both at the Laboratory and across the DOE complex in preparation for next-generation platforms beyond exascale systems. CCS-7 also provides state-of-the-art computer science and software engineering capabilities to advance LANL’s mission-critical and cutting-edge simulation codes to ensure their continued success in addressing important scientific questions for the nation. CCS-7has approximately 50 employees and students and an annual budget of roughly $27M.
Scientist 2 ($94,100.00 - $155,700.00)
The successful candidate will be required to:
●Develop and optimize software routinely run on the world’s largest high-performance computers.
●Work with team members to make modifications and additions to existing code and methods.
●Leverage, maintain and improve software testing frameworks.
●Design, document, and implement new methods and algorithms for current and future architectures.
●Work both independently and collaboratively in technically diverse teams.
●Present the results of research and development at conferences, workshops, and meetings.
Scientist 3 ($113,100.00 - $190,900.00)
In addition to the duties outlined above, the Scientist 3 will be required to:
● Work with limited direction, and contribute to technical decision making in areas of expertise.
● Contribute to proposals and/or programmatic scope for research and implementation of new methods, frameworks and programming models.
● Interact with people from other internal and external organizations and programs to create collaborations.
● Mentor junior scientists and students.

● Demonstrated experience in parallel/concurrent programming
● Demonstrated ability to accept initial direction and requirements from technical project leads
● Demonstrated experience in software engineering and continuous integration
● Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively to complete deliverables by a deadline
Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 3:
In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Scientist 3 level requ i res:
● Demonstrated experience with an HPC technology (e.g. MPI, GPUs, many-core, task-based) in delivered product
● Demonstrated experience presenting the results of research at conferences, workshops and meetings
● Demonstrated ability to participate in computer science and high-performance computing planning activities at a national or international level .
● Experience with Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment
● Experience working with task-based programming systems (Legion, HPX, Charm++)
● Strong interpersonal and communication skills
● Ability to work in a collaborative and multidisciplinary scientific environment
● Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearanceor the ability to obtain one in a reasonable timeframe.
Scientist 2 Education Required: A minimum of a B.S., or M.S. in Computer Science, Computational Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related field from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience
Scientist 3 Education Required: A minimum of an M.S. or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computational Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related field from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
