Job Information

Los Alamos National Laboratory Atomistic Modeling Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral candidate in the area of computational material science, with an emphasis on atomistic modeling to understand deformation mechanisms in polycrystalline metals. A successful applicant will work with computational materials science models to investigate defect evolution in metals at the nanoscale with particular interest in the interaction of dislocations and defects such as grain boundaries. This position is primarily focused on developing a high-throughput approach using LAMMPS to understand GB-dislocation interactions, the data from which will be an input to a machine learning model for scale bridging to phase field mesoscale models. A successful applicant will be expected to publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present at well-known conferences. This work is part of a larger project. A successful applicant will also be expected to work well in a team environment and have the ability to coordinate sharing information with lower and higher length scale models. In addition, a successful applicant will be expected to coordinate with experimentalists to validate new model enhancements incorporated as part of the project.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Candidates with a strong background/experience in the following areas are invited to apply:

  • Experience utilizing and developing atomistic simulation methods like molecular dynamics.

  • Experience using analysis tools like OVITO or own algorithms for fast analysis of simulation results.

  • Knowledge and experience working with high performance computing.

  • Knowledge and experience working and developing interatomic potentials.

  • Basic Materials science knowledge with a focus on grain boundaries and interfaces.

  • Mechanical behavior of metals.

  • Code development experience.

  • Proficiency in Fortran, C, C++, or Python.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with using LAMMPS software package.

  • Knowledge of dislocation and defect theory.

  • Knowledge of crystallography, microstructural evolution.

  • Knowledge and experience with machine learning techniques.

Education: A Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Solid Mechanics or related fields is required. The candidate must be within 5 years of completion of Ph.D. at time of being proposed for review by the committee, or will have completed all Ph. D. requirements by commencement of the appointment. Excellent written and communication skills in English are required. Non-US citizens are eligible for this position.

Note to Applicants: To be fully considered for the position, please include a cover letter in which you detail how your experience relates to each of the required and desired skills as applicable.
